Have not long started new Tai Chi class, have now done 4 classes.
At first class I wore socks as I get cramp wearing trainers, but was told I would have to class barefoot for safety reasons. I go barefot every week now because of this. Do people her go barefoot for Tai Chi or what is best to wear.
In East Asia - most Tai Chi student wear rubber base and cotton top shoe for Tai Chi practise - i feel the reason for doing this - is to prevent water from the earth to enter the body through the base of the feet - this can cause inbalance of chi in the body system and it is not healthy for our body.
By wearing shoe - it can promote chi flow to the base of the feet - wearing shoe will keep the feet warm - easier for chi to flow there.

Hi Suzy2
Welcome to Hp
If you go to they sell tai chi shoes.
If you are practicing on a smooth wooden floor or carpet, the risk of unbalanced chi (qi) is very unlikely. Keeping the feet warm is important, after all it's the UK, not some lovely warm country in SE Asia.
Ask your tutor what they think of being barefoot or shod.

tai chi barefoot
Thanks for the advice. My tai Chi instructor told me it was better for me doing class in barefeet rather than socks or trainers so do not have much choice although it is nearly a 2 hour class. I am getting a bit used to it now thankfully.
I do not know if it will be worth trying to order the tai chi shoes you told me about as we only have 3 more classes before breaking up for xmas.
dont know if anyone can corroborate the fact that people who have diabetes should always wear shoes when training? It was something highlighted to me during one of my teacher training sessions in tai chi.
that was a good question , i am also about to start classes and haven't got a clue to wear, shoes i now got.
but as for clothes........... what do you suggest ???
Hi Moggy
Just wear loose comfortable clothing.
