In the west we do our new years resolution starting January 1, but to eastern thought in accordance to the cycle nature and Tao represented by the five elements we would think about what we want to do at that time (represented by the element Water and the color dark blue/black represents deep thought. Spring would be the time to start your resolution represented by the color green, this is the time to spring new growth. So don't feel guilty if you miss your start on Jan 1, you will have another chance.
I'm glad JB has brought this up because I think Jan 1st is crap time to make any kind of change in someone's life. Winter is the time of introspection, Spring is the time of growth and new beginnings. (Seasons from a UK / northern hemisphere point of view.)
Millions of people make new years resolutions around now, and how many of them carry them through? Not many! Why? Because they are not flowing with the natural course of life. Eating lots of food and getting fat I quite normal this time of year. We need it traditionally to get through the rest of the winter - those dark cold sunless days. So having a guilty purge after Christmas is not going to be constructive. Notice how many people are depressed with the winter and financial blues by the end of January. Not a good state of mind for change. If someone is going to purge themselves or wish to change something, prehaps Spring/Easter time is more sensible - as JB is suggesting.
Winter festival best wishes

Hi RP...
Although I agree with most of what you say.....from the 21 December the days start to get longer and the sun gets stronger every day.In the past, Yule, or Christmas was the an event or celebration to break up the long cold Winter blues that set in within our communities. The resolutions that we make at New Year after the Yule celebrations were their hopes and dreams being placed for the coming year....but post Christmas was traditionally a time for reflection and personal soul searching in preperation for our mental and physical traditional Spring clean....
A time for positive forward thinking...
Hi Oaky
On new years day (also being a full moon) I went up to the cliffs (15 minute walk from me) and ritually threw a piece of paper out into the sea with what I wish to let go of psychologically. Now just let the forces of natural and the cosmos do its stuff.
Best wishes for the new year.
