Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice regarding the sports therapy degree and job/career prospects.

I'm 23 years old and am thinking of applying to do the sports therapy degree at university in 2014. I'm currently doing a bit of work experience with my local rugby club's sports therapist who is a senior lecturer in sports therapy at a local uni and I have the level 2 VTCT sports therapies certificate, level 3 swedish massage diploma and an NVQ level 2 in fitness instruction so I feel I have a little basic knowledge.

What I want to know is this...

If I study for the degree will I have decent job prospects after I qualify?
I'm aware that most people are struggling in the current economy anyway and jobs are sparse but I want to feel as if me doing this degree will give me a vocation and will set me up for a career in the field.
Do you think this is true?

How likely is it these days to find jobs whether they be part time or full time and do many people employ sports therapists?
Or do most people work as self employed therapists?
How hard is this to do?

I just worry that the 3 years will be a waste of time and money and I suppose I want some reassurance from others that there are decent prospects out there?

I don't want to do a course for so long and spend such a huge amount of money if I'll never be able to support myself doing it.

Thanks for your help 🙂

Hi Emma, I have never heard of a level 2 cert in sports therapies, but if you look on a website called Active Health Group, there is a forum that answers most of these questions, they have also been discussed at length on this forum, so try the search facility

Hmm I am currently doing a bit of experience with my regional football golf club's activities specialist who is a mature speaker in activities treatment at a regional uni and I have the stage 2 VTCT activities treatments certification, stage 3 remedial massage treatment degree and an NVQ stage 2 in fitness training so I feel I have a little basic knowledge.
