Due to a completely stupid accident I took a blow to the leg 2 weeks ago, I am unable to run as I can't put pressure on the ball of my foot and I really am like a bear with a sore head at the moment ! I am supposed to be doing a 10k run on Sunday, so not far but was really looking for a pb.
Doc says he is pretty sure that it isn't fracture and it would be really unlikely, I agree and I am not too worried about a fracture but as discussed with him I am so surprised at the length of time it is taking to heal with no improvement at all on a day to day basis.
I wondered if anyone has any advice for this sort of injury. It is very tender to touch around the area, no signs of a bruise and minimal swelling, although it does look slightly bent!
I have full range of motion in the ankle.
I am icing, elevating etc, resting sort of. I can cycle so have been doing that in the gym as it doesn't cause any pain or discomfort, but as said unable to run without sharp pain. The guys in the gym commented that I am over compensating on other activities too, squats etc as there is a definite lean on to the right leg.
Any thoughts ?
Was sub-perisosteal heamatoma the doctors diagnosis?
If so, unfortunately the only treatment I would recommend is rest (pref NWB) until the bleeding has been reabsorbed. To do anything else would risk bony spur (osteophyte) formation at the site of the truama 🙁
Not sure if you understand the pathology but basically you my "know" the bone is not damaged, the doctor my "know" the bone is not damaged but until the periosteum has repaired your body is "unsure"
Any additional truama in the area may well push it over the edge and start it (mistakingly) calficfying the area (the condition is closely related to myositis ossificans / 'charely horse')
Sorry
HI DFNU
Sub-perisosteal heamatoma was the doctors diagnosis.
I guess I knew it should be rested but just needed someone other than hubby and myself to tell me!
thanks for the additional info into the injury though, means I can get my head around it slightly - albeit frustrating.
I guess that 10k pb will have to wait for another day.
glad to "help"
sorry to be the bringer of bad tidings though
on the plus side if you do rest it (no heels, high impact or squats!) I would expect it to be ok in about a week or so
Icing will help but will be quite "uncomfortable" since you need to apply it for at least 20mins (pref nearer 30 but no longer) (providing you have good circulation are not diabetic or suffer from reynauds or any other such contraindication)
An ice (foot) bath would be a good) idea just keep pinching your toes to make sure circulation is only being slowed and not stopped!
There are quite a few layers to get through before any temperature change applied to the ball of your foot will get through to the bone (why couldn't you have injured your elbow instead!)
Hope you recover soon

Hi, thanks again. All this for tidying up the garden in the rain!!! My husband is currently in a cast at the moment (we are a bit of pair!) due to micro fracture surgery - we saw his surgeon yesterday for a check up and he was intrigued by my limp - very friendly guy who we have seen far to often over the last few years. He said the same as below and ducked when he said it! lol.
Oh well I have never had an injury that has actually stopped me doing something and required rest, I guess welcome to my 30s!!
thanks again - Clair
