Does living in a sunny state like Arizona or other states other than Illinois help you recover from depression and help with spiritual healing? In the last year I have lost my oldest daughter in a house fire, in the process of a divorce, and dealing with ones that have brought up painful memories of my past right after my daughter died. I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I have to move away in order to recover spiritually from the pain I am in. Need a sunnier state to live and recover in.

Hi Tegan. I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. 🙁 I can definitely vouch for living somewhere sunny. I'm from eastern Canada which has -20 and -30 days more often than I like. In the winter you get up in the dark, spend all day at work, go home in the dark and rarely see any sunlight.

In the too short summer, I would get outside as much as I could, but that was the problem, it was way too short. I moved to Thailand in 2004 and lived there until 2008. I am now in Dubai which has sun around 360 days of the year.

I've also been to Nevada and Arizona in the early spring, and even though the nights were cold, the mild sunny days were amazing. It really does make a difference. If you have sun most of the time, you can decide when to go out, for as long as you want on your own terms. You don't have to wait a week or more for the weather to give you a break.

There is much scientific evidence for the benefits of sunlight and natural light. Let us know how you make out.

Hi Tegan - Welcome to HP - lots of lovely people here.

Sorry to hear you are going through such a difficult time. Do look at the Mental and Emotional forum for lots of other discussions.

Certainly, living in sunny climes should up your vitamin D levels which have a lot to do with mood as well as its physical benefits. Sedona has a great reputation for spiritual matters and, if that is your inclination is there anything stopping you from going there? If it was closer I'd be there like a shot! What about friends, family and neighbours - are they not supportive?

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) has an awful lot to offer in the way of dealing with stress and depression - see here. This is certainly what I'd try if I was in your position - the effects can be impressive, but it is best to do this with a . There is plenty for you to read.

There are some lifestyle and nutritional strategies that can help too - like enjoying some fresh air and exercise daily. Having a laugh with friends or even watching funny movies - whatever makes you laugh - one of the best remedies for cheering yourself up. Allow time for yourself doing things for you - you are worth it! You are unique and deserve to be the lovely person you are. Eat fresh unprocessed foods, plenty of vegetables - some of them raw - wholegrains, not white varieties, eat oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring) for essential omega-3 oils, and reduce sugar intake that can upset your mood. You will find useful general information on diet .

Hope things get sorted for you very soon.

Dear Tegan
Sorry to hear of your loss. Move, if thats how it feels. You know within what will be good for you. Sunny places are generally more conducive to a certain mind set, but only upto a certain degree.
Pain can push one towards spirituality. It can work as an catalyst for diving in. don't make spirituality an escape from your pain. Pain is what you need to be with, feel, embrace. Allow yourself to let it in. Grieving fully will help spiritually too. Even in just doing that growth happens. Ask for help, there is so much available. It can be much easier that way
May these hard times pass soon
loving hugs

Sunny States?

:nature-smiley-008:I have lived in a variety of places due to my husband's job..and I LOVE living in a sunny locale. I do enjoy rain and the ocassional cloudy, stormy day, but my overall experience living in a desert climate, was that people were in a better mood. I understand that you have been through some difficult circumstances, and "running" away from anything is never a good idea, BUT..if you are ready to "run to" a new start, Arizona is a beautiful place. I have many friends that live there and they absolutely love it. A place can't heal you, but Arizona is def. a good place to connect with nature and other spiritual people. The rocks and landscape are amazing. You may miss the "bad weather" at times, but overall the people there are friendly and it's just a vibrant, progressive place. Sedona is amazing, but so are many of the quaint little towns. I lived right on the Nevada/Arizona border, and it is def. the favorite place I've ever been. I find myself looking at pictures of the desert landscape daily, as I am currently back in Ohio. It is pretty here, but something about the rocks moves me..and it def. has a spiritual energy there that I haven't experienced anywhere else in the world. I know moving is never is easy choice, but I don't know anyone who's left AZ because they didn't like it! ~~Blessings~~ to you. Sending healing thoughts your way...Lana
