My wife and I moved into a new house almost a year ago, and on more than one occasion, I encountered what I took to be a "house spirit". Mind you, I was quite stoned at the time :p, so I never really took it that seriously. It seemed pretty real at the time, of course, but after sobering up, I thought of it as "just another weird trip".

But now I'm posting this, mainly out of curiosity, to see if anyone out there has also encountered a "house spirit" or is knowledgeable enough in spiritual matters to be familiar with "house spirits". I'm just curious to see what kind of responses I get.

Here's a couple poems I wrote that we inspired by my experiences:

The House Spirit

Every home has a soul,
As unique as you or I,
As every Human - man, woman, and child.
As diverse as all the qualities nature spews forth.

The soul of the home - our last - spoke:
"What?" I startled - for I did not know of house spirits.
"Who are you, and what do you want?!"
"I am the House spirit! I will be your portal!"

And it was thus.
The House Spirit sorted through the demons,
It introduced the truly Angelic.
But it did not yet cure.

Now we find ourselves here - graduated to a new home.
The House Spirit thus speaks:
"I am the House spirit! I Will be a friend!"
"For you have been a friend - to others, and now to me!"

Thus I have graduated.
And likewise, my muse has graduated.
For I see the glow in her eyes.
I see the House Spirit speak through her.

The House Spirit II

The house spirit is built,
It is built from the memories,
From the loves and the terrors,
From the crumbs of the families,

That were left behind,
As each one moved on,
They moved on down the path,
That they forever have travelled.

The house spirit is thus nurtured.
It is given life and soul,
And all the colors of The All,
That make it the beauty it is.

But beauty is in the eye of the beholder,
And there are noble and wretched souls,
That pass down her many halls,
some nurturing, some rotting.

You never know what the House Spirit,
Has in store for you.
You enter as you are,
And you leave as something more.

I've met a house spirit or two... 🙂 Usually if doing a house blessing, I sit in the heart of the house and ask for the house spirit to introduce themselves and bless the family dwelling there.

Love your poems. 🙂

Hi Gib.

Yes, my home here in France is full of 'little folk' as we, my hubby and I, call them. There are about 20 of them and they tend to sit along the main beam in our converted barn. I only 'know' this when I tune into them.

When we first arrived, over 4 years ago, things used to go missing or be misplaced...they would always turn up again a few hours, or days, later.

One day I was washing up when I glanced up and through the window saw one of them with my own 2 eyes. He was marching with great determination across the garden towards next door's veg patch, going straight through the dividing wire fence. He was about 2ft tall approx. had on black boots; trousers with a bib and braces and his shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. I can't remember if he had anything on his head, but he had his head looking down onto the ground as his little arms swung strongly back and forth.
He was obviously on a mission.
I was so chuffed to have actually seen one!

We held a little ceremony and asked them to stay and help us with the barn convertion etc. and since then they have 'behaved' and all is well.

I feel very lucky and privilged to have them here with us.

Hi Gib,
I have seen several throughout my life, the first was in a very old hotel I was working in, I was totalely alone at the time and I saw the lady from behind, walk into one of the bedrooms I followed her to see who she was and she just disapeared. It unnerved me at the time. Other sightings have been simular and they did not pay any heed to me. Till the last one, I was having supper at a friends house we were sitting across from one another on settee's, when my friends face turn to horror, sitting next to me was a young man dressed in shorts, stripey tshirt, blonde hair, lovely face, bare legs. My friend ask who he was and he just vanished...we were both in state of disbelief, shock.
My friend had only just moved into the house and was told after he had enquired to his neighbour that two young men had died over the years in that house...one a sucicide and the other in a car crash.
My friend had his house blessed and he hasnt seen or felt any activity since.

There was another one at a residential home that I worked in, that seemed to spend all of its time in the staff bedroom/office. Nearly all the staff had seen /felt her, brushing her fingers through your hair even getting into bed and snuggling up to one member of staff. When I was on a sleep and felt to tired to be scared would just tell her to be quite and I was to exhausted to play usually after a awful shift.
We were not sure after many disscussions if it was spirit or could have been an alter ego as we had many disturbed clients. Again there was a Blessing and no more activity

Love Orchid x

Yes, I'm sure we have one in our 'new' house on the Isle of Wight. I'm not worried by him and am happy to have him around. He was a bit nosy at first and used to watch me have a bath - but don't know whether he still does. He is part of the household and we welcome him.

Based on your responses, it sounds like these "house spirits" are more like human souls that dwell in the house. The impression I got was that the spirit belonged to the house itself. I remember having the insight that as various tenents move in and then out of the house, they leave pieces of themselves behind, parts of their souls so to speak, and over time these pieces collect and get claimed by the house, and become part of the soul of the house. I remember seeing that the basement was like the unconscious mind of the house and the main level was the ego and the upper rooms were like the superego.

But these impressions were very vague and my head wasn't exactly clear at the time. I'm not sure how much of it I made up and how much of it was real. I'm quite comfortable believing that I made it all up in my head under the influence of drugs, but I'm a very open minded guy and I'm not afraid to explore other possibilities. I'm open to the possibility that what I experienced was actually the presence of human souls that used to live here but moved on.

I want to test this out. Every time I encounter what seems like a portal to a new reality, I get excited. By "new reality" I mean a completely new way of looking at the world and understanding it, and if it requires leaving an old worldview behind, I think of it as embarking on a new reality. The idea that my house is haunted or that it has its own spirit is an exciting idea, and I'd love to see if I can make anything out of it.

If there's any recommendations you guys can make for "tapping in" to the house spirit, something that I can get feedback from, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks.

Just sit in what you feel is the heart of the home - usually the living room or kitchen - light a candle, surround yourself with protective light and ask to speak to the spirit of the house. You should get an impression, a name, something like that. It's basically the same principle as speaking to the spirit of place outdoors.

You can chat to it/them, tell it how much you like your new home, thanks for allowing you to live there, you'd appreciate if they would keep a loving eye on you and your family... and so on.

Just be careful about asking for their protection because I know someone who had an over-zealous house spirit who tended to keep 'undesirable' visitors away... or at least, the ones he considered as such! 🙂

Earthbound Spirits vs House Spirits

It might be necessary to make a distinction between the house spirits who are to houses what elemental/fairy spirits are to nature and earthbound spirits who are attached to a place and have not crossed over for whatever reason.

The over-protective spirit who was mentioned in a previous post as keeping undesirable visitors away sounds as if he could be an earthbound spirit.

In which case, it's a good idea to request assistance from Angels/the Third Order to help the spirit cross over. Earthbound spirits cannot continue on their path of spiritual evolution until they cross over plus it's a negative influence for the occupant, because earthbound spirits draw on the energy of the living.
