Hi,

Does anyone on here do shiatsu?

I am wanting to train in shiatsu, and wondered if anyone had any experiences they would like to share?

RE: Shiatsu

Hi Apache,

I began practising Shiatsu in 1994 after training with The European School of Shiatsu, run by Chris Jarmey. Shiatsu is an excellent way of gaining an insight into Oriental Medicine and learning a very effective form of energetic bodywork at the same time. Shiatsu works on many levels, encompassing not only the physical, but the emotional and spiritual also, this is so beacause all of these things are made up from Ki, the univeral life force, and learning to understand and work with Ki is one of the central aims of Shiatsu.

I've used shiatsu in many situations and since 1996 I have been working in a centre for people with disabilities, treating conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy etc., I've found shiatsu to be an excellent treatment for these conditions and have had some very pleasing results over the years.

Teaching Shiatsu is now one of my Joys and I currently run the Kent Branch of The European School, where we hold classes from Basic Skills all the way to practitioner level.

Hope some of my experiences help you in your journey.

Best wishes, Tony

RE: Shiatsu

Hi,

Thanks both of you - I would also be interested in how you found the training? The course I am hoping to do is run over a number of weekends in a three year period (although I will at the end be qualified to do both horses and humans).

And on a slightly mercanry note - is there much demand for shiatsu?

And more sucess stories would be great!

Thanks again

Apache

RE: Shiatsu

Hi Apache,

Demand for Shiatsu varies according to location... and to your marketing skills. I do know a few practionner sin Scotland who are making a decent living out of Shiatsu. And some who strugle. AN dit has nothing to do with how good their SHiatsu is -I can say this because I got treatments from practionners in both categories.
Succes stories: everyone I have treated so far has slpet better for a few nights after the treatment. I even have a client who recovered good sleep after Shiatsu when sleeping pills were of no help for him. Headaches I find- or better said my clients!- react very well to Shiatsu. SO do migraines. Back problems are another success story I can quote. Both from having beem on the receiving end (a slipped lumbar disk sorted out in 45 minutes) and from having tretaed clients.

RE: Shiatsu

HI again,

Yes, most courses are week-ends (about 11 a year) over a 3 year period. There is a lot to learn, but I found most of it quite fascinating.
Doing Shiatsu on horses is one of the most amazing experiences I had. Although I have had no formal training for Shiatsuing horses, It was not too complicated to adapt it to horses. Well, once I had been introduced a bit to "horse language"...

RE: Shiatsu

Horse language? For instance do you stand with one foot flat and the other one lifted up -your toes only touching the ground- as your favourite "relaxation pause"??!! Well, the first time I saw a horse doing that, I wasn't sure if he was getting ready to kick me or not! I relaxed as soon as I was told "that's him relaxing"...
