Hallo

I would like some advice on whether you Reiki Practitioners get your clients to sign a treatment consent form? Personally I have never done that as a client , however as I'm just setting up the UK Reiki Fed has a consent form as part of their practitioners pack. I'm just not sure, it seems so clinical, but then maybe in this day and age of litigation it is necessary?
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Reiki Earth

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

Like you say, in these days of litigation it's a necessity really.
It's no real hardship for the client as you can include it as part of the initial consultation and case history and your insurer will probably be a lot happier if you do get your clients to sign a consent form.

It's a shame it has to be done, but that's a sign of the times eh....

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

Hi Reiki Earth,

We always get our clients to sign a consent form. It clears us and confirms the Clients wish to receive the chosen therapy.

We were trained to do this as a standard procedure when we trained as Reflexologists and we have continued it over into Reiki. The UK Reiki Federation form is very good. It integrates with their Client Record Guidelines and reminds us of the procedures to be followed in keeping the Client informed, at the very first appointment, of what Reiki can and can't do. The inclusion of the Parental/Guardian's Consent form is an added bonus.

If - and it is a big IF - a client turns nasty and alleges common assault against a Reiki Practitioner then a signed consent form eliminates this risk. It IS an unfortunate sign of modern day society that we have to ake these precautions.

However, it is your choice on how to run your own practise. Perhaps a query addressed to your insurers on this point might clarify the situation for you - and us, if you would be so kind as to let us know the result.;)

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

I have never signed one as a client recieving therapy, but I certainly wouldn't take the chance if I was a reiki practitioner. In my reflexology course we were taught to add it on after the last question on the medical health sheet. Something like

'I testify that all the details I have provided about my health are correct to the best of my knowledge, and I consent to being treated by natural therapy.'

That way you don't have to make a big thing about it, but you still have the necessary paperwork to fall back on if anyone does make a complaint.

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

Interestingly I have never signed one as a client either. But I do ask my clients to sign a consent form, although I don't actually label it as such. I combine it with a treatment plan and ask the client to read through and confirm that they are happy to go ahead with my recomendations.

'I testify that all the details I have provided about my health are correct to the best of my knowledge, and I consent to being treated by natural therapy.'

My disclaimer is pretty much like Azalias

Thanks a lot for that information - it's interesting that you all use signed consent forms yet as clients have not experienced that. I think in a way, getting the client to sign also gives an impression of professionalism, so I've decided I'll go that way, too.

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

And just as a follow up - if the client comes back for subsequent treatments, do you get them to sign every single time, or for an agreed course of treatments?

Thanks,

My consent form is signed once and stays valid until the person withdraws their consent 🙂

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

I have signed one as a client. When I first met my Reiki Master, I asked for a few sessions as recipient to see how she worked before deciding to learn Reiki with her. She used a standard form to take a medical history (possibly other details, I don't remember) and I had to sign it at the end. If I remember correctly it involved signing to say both that the info I had provided was true to the best of my knowledge, and that I gave my consent for treatment. I thought she was (and is) very professional.

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

I have a consent section on my Consultation form which specifies that the client should have a Dr's diagnosis or should seek medical attention. Also, with their permission I am happy to talk to their GP to explain what I am doing and for me to contact their GP on their behalf if anything comes up during Reiki sessions I feel their GP should know.
I word it this way so that if a client refuses to see their GP and anything untoward should happen I can point out that I have requested they seek medical diagnosis. If I have a client who refuses to go to their GP I write each session on their notes "advised client to see GP, client has refused". To me that shows I am being professionally responsible and that it is the client's decision. The difference between 'Alternative' ie the Doctor OR me, and 'Complementary' the Doctor AND me!

So far, in 6 years nobody has refused to sign the form,

Love and light

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

I have been asked a few times as a client to sign forms (was not for Reiki). But it did give a bit of a "clinical feel" to the whole thing, and in one case also a sort of "Oh, the therapist may not really believe me?" feeling. I never ask my clients to sign any forms (except parental conscent for under 16's). I take it that if the client comes to my treatment room, it does mean that they agree on having a treatment from me!

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

I always take a full consultation from a client when they come to me, even if it is for reiki. I would not feel covered otherwise. I also feel that the consultation is a good icebreaker where you can not only glean medical information from them but also emotional insights and the ability to build up some rapport before treatment commences.. and of course to ensure the client is completely comfortable prior to a treatment.

I ask my clients to sign a form each treatment, so that I have a written record that the treatment took place. It also helps me to keep on top of my other paperwork following treatment.

It'd be nice if we didn't have to do this, but I do like the update period so I can refer to it for later sessions.

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

Thanks very much. I don't like the idea of getting a client to sign every single time - but I like the of signing once and letting that signature cover subsequent treatments. I guess to cover everything one could put a clause onto the form that states client consent for later treatments.

Thanks again,
Holistic Earth

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

Hi

Thanks to reiki angel for showing me this thread....

I need some guidance.. what kind of info do u write on your forms... and something paul says here

If - and it is a big IF - a client turns nasty and alleges common assault against a Reiki Practitioner then a signed consent form eliminates this risk. It IS an unfortunate sign of modern day society that we have to ake these precautions.

is it by signing a form because reiki is hands on.. that this will emliante or is there some clause about reiki being hands on?

I really want to get this right, and I wish my reiki master hold explained more about this kind of thing .. which was not explained anything except reiki ethics..

Regards

RE: Question for Reiki Practioners

Hi Flower if you like I can send you Reiki Consultation forms to ponder over and use free.
PM your email.

It sad, but I agree with Paul, you only need the one person who not happy and could cause you unhappyness.

You are touching another person body, and a persons word of consent is not enough IMO, and just in case they become troublesome. Something I have not come across, thank god.
