I have a lump/dent at the back of my head, left/centre just underneath the crown. It gives me no problems, and because I've got hair (hope I don't lose it like my Nan, bless her) it's not noticeable unless you affectionately pat me on the top of the head, say. In which case you say "Oh whatever's that?"
My mother can't remember me having it as a baby/child.
had it x-rayed 15 years ago because I was conscious of it and thought maybe it was getting bigger - it certainly hasn't increased in size since then. The specialist told me it must have been there since birth and had I considered taking up boxing as my skull is so thick? Apparently it's 1/4 of an inch thicker than the norm! Luckily, or maybe inevitably, I'm thick skinned so that didn't bother me.
Nonetheless it's about a centimeter dip/rise. I did do a lot of headstands when I was a little girl.
I rather wondered about phrenology - am I missing a bit of my brain - have I got more of another bit?
Anyway i'd be grateful for any ideas.
Sharon

RE: Lumpy skull - any ideas why?

Do you know anything about your own birth. i.e. forceps or ventouse delivery?

Unless you have any other health problems, i.e. fatigue, depression, brain fog, etc, then I really wouldn't worry about it.

There is a condition can cause thikening of the skull called Paget's, that is quite rare and only becomes apparent in later years. I'm reluctant to even say this as it is unlikely and wouldn't want you to worry about. Your age age isn't available, but I'm guessing you're younger rather than older and they had considered that one if it was a possibility.

It's most likley to be just a family trait.

It's possible that cranial osteopathy may reduce the anomoly, but if you have a thick skull, then the sutures (joints between boney plates) may have fused, so it's unlikely to have a huge impact. If you have other problems, then it may be worth a try.

I treated a baby recently for a mishapen head. I think I saw him 3 times and we are going to see how he is in a couple of months.

The odd thing was that this child had very apparent allergies, both inherited from both parents and probably a few that he'd acquired also. He had quite a severe reaction to MMR and they had travelled quite some distance to see me.

They only seemed interested in his appearance and not interested in dealing with, what to me would be a much higher priority. [sm=scratchchin.gif]

Well - guess we'll see if/when they return.

Andrew.
