Hi There,
I am starting my osteopathic studies this september. I was wondering if it is possible for aUK qualified osteopath to practice in the US? From what i have read US osteopaths follow a substantially different curriculum, go to med school, and have to complete residency etc.
Any feedback appreciated
RE: can a UK qualified osteopath practice in the US?
Have you asked anyone atthe British Osteopathy Association for their advice? I do know that the US training standards are very stringent.
Hi pOrt,
The short answer to your question is 'no'.
You have to be a qualified medical doctor to work as an osteopath in the US.
Just out of interest where are you studying?
Adam
Hi Adam,
Thanks for your reply, that's what i thought but just wanted to double check.
I'm studying at the 'college of osteopaths' in London.
Regards.
I think that osteopathy is a combined degree with medicine in the US. I think it was in the 60's that the AMA threatened to outlaw osteopathy if they didn't join the medics.
You could probably practice, but not use the title osteopath, so maybe as a manipulative therapist or may be talk to the American Chiropractic Association -
You may be able to do further medical study over there to qualify or I think in Canada osteopaths have the same status as in the UK.
Andrew.
Hi pOrt,
I'm at the London School of Osteopathy so was wondering if we might be class mates.
Anyway, glad to be of service and good luck with your studies!
Adam
