Hi,

I am hoping someone can offer me some advice.
I am currently trying hard to reduce my BMI below 30 so that I can have IVF.
(It is at about 35 at the moment)
I am finding it so hard. I constantly feel starving. I have been this way for years. My doctor is not interested in helping me, he told me to go home and be happy being fat the last time I saw him about this!
What I need is any advice on what might help reduce my appetite a little. I am open to try anything as long as it it not to expensive as I am a poor student. I would prefer a natural remedy rather to take or use rather than having to see a practitioner for a treatment for the cost side of things.
Thanks for any advice you offer in advance, Lilly x

hi lilly

you might consider auricular acupuncture, ie acupuncture of the ears. there's a specific point for appetite control which is used in weight management treatment. we also apply press seeds or magnets to points including this one at the end of the treatment so that you can continue self-treatment between sessions.

usually a course of 6 weekly treatments is recommended, and the effects should be cumulative.

if you feel starving all the time try fennel seeds as it can help with weight reduction by suppressing the appetite.
you can find out more if you look up fennel seeds on the internet.

Hi Lilly2k3

As a Personal Trainer I would advise you to start the Low Gi diet. Before you start rolling your eyes and thinking 'oh no, not another diet' you need to read up on it. For a start you should never feel hungry - the book will tell you which foods to eat forbulk and to help stop your feelings of hunger. The diet was devised many years ago for diabetics and has more recently been researched and used for the general public. You will not find any crazy food advice, just plain and simple healthy eating. You will learn to start with the best breakfast and what to use as snack foods. The book will also teach you about portion sizes and will give you some ideas for daily and weekly meal planning.
However, as a Personal Trainer I hear time and time again 'eugh, I don't like that' or ' I don't eat vegetables, I only eat peas'. If you fall into that category (sorry to sound blunt) then you need to get over it! Turn yourself into an eating machine, only eating what the book tells you. Trust me (I'm a Personal Trainer!!) your taste buds will adapt to your new foods and you will start to like your new diet.
Obviously, given my position, I am going to recommend that you also take some exercise. Try finding a Personal Trainer in your area (use Google or Yellow Pages). Make sure the exercise you choose is suitable - I don't recommend that you take up a high impact sport like running but you could try walking or better still Nordic Walking. Try Google again to look up Gymstick Nordic Walking.
Above all, remember that you have two goals:
1. IVF treatment (ergo two fingers to your GP)
2. Your own health and sanity
I recommend the book 'The Low Gi Diet by Dr Jennie Brand-Miller published by Hodder Mobius books.
Good Luck
Martin

RE: What can help reduce appetite?

Taking a Chromium supplement can help with appetite control as it helps to balance your blood sugar. Also make sure you are eating plenty of fibre to fill you up - plenty of fruit, vegetables, wholemeal pasta etc. A good tip is to start the day with a bowl of porridge mixed with fresh fruit, you will notice that you will probably eat a little bit less throughout the day.

You need to believe that you can do it, so write out your goal - IVF - every day and reward yourself (in a non-food related way) for each little step you make towards that goal.

You say your doctor is useless, but it may be worth seeing a different dr and trying one of the prescription medicines that can help control your appetite - they work for many people, and used alongside other more natural measures will make a huge difference!

Hi Lilly2k3,

Try to find another doctor who will hear out and willing to help you, because there are prescription medications for weight loss that might be effective.

Hoodia Gordonii is one remedy that helps to suppress apetite.

One member mentioned fennel, here is some info about fennel:

"In renaissance Europe it was used to keep hunger at bay and was thought to be helpful in curing obesity. While studies are currently taking place at the other end of the scale as fennel is being tested in trials as a possible treatment for the disease anorexia nervosa."

RE: What can help reduce appetite?

I personally would not take anything to suppress your appetite - you need to maintain your health anda low GI diet seems good advice. Has your GP referred you to a dietitian to see if you have any food allergies? Your body may not be metabolisingyour food properly and this should be medically investigated. I was constantly starving and put on a lot of weight (as well as sleeping at the drop of a hat)when I tried tocut out meatand felt better within two days of returning to meat. This may not apply to you however my point is a qualified dietitian should give advice on helping you and if your GP hasn't referred you and expects you to go it alone go to another GP and ask for a referral. Meanwhile, next time you feel hungry try drinking plain water instead, your bodymay justneed rehydrated.
I have a friend who was tryingto get pregnant for quite a while and getting quite stressed with the process. She took up Yoga and regular meditation and had IVF. She now has lovely twin girls- good luck with your IVF and get aGP who will support you[sm=grouphug.gif]

You should drink a lot of water, green tea or orange juice. Also, nuts and berries can help you to curb your appetite. Also read this artice about ways to curb appetite
