Hi guys, sorry if this has been asked before. Tried to find it on previous threads but to no avail.

Does anyone know of any PROVEN (or have positive first hand experience with) specific brands of St Johns wort?

I'm really looking for it in its tincture/liquid form as I prefer my vitamins/minerals etc in this form but really I'm just looking for any brand that is proven to lift depression. I read that atleast 900mg Hypericum in tablets and 4% Hypericum in liquid is needed to have good effects but many brands online do not state how much Hypericum they have.

Any help you guys could give me would be gladly appreciated.

Chris

St. John's Wort

Hi Chris

Holland & Barrett sell 'Herbal Authority' SJW tincture. I think this is the best way to take it, I haven't found tablets helpful. You have to take it 3 times a day, which is sometimes hard to remember, and results are not immediate, so you have to persevere. I don't know about PROOF - I don't think there have been any controlled studies, so evidence is going to be anecdotal.

Good luck

Oh, ok, thanks. I may check this out. Did this brand work for you? Personally?

Hi King Chris, this is purely my own experience: I've found that Kira one-a-day St Johns Wort tablets do help in moderate depression. You have to persevere with them - sometimes it takes 3 weeks to notice a difference (can be a little sooner in some people), but I'm told that prescription Antidepressants can also take that long.

They are a bit pricey - 30 days supply is £14.95 - but, speaking personally, I never noticed any side effects at all, which is not always the case with prescribed anti-d's. Anyway, they have worked on a few occasions for me.

Prior to that, I'd tried Holland and Barrett's own SJW tablets, but had not found the benefits. Of course, the usual warnings apply re. checking to see if they interact with any other medication one may be taking.

Hope this helps!

Just to add to that point, St John's Wort lowers the effectiveness of the birth control pill so be warned!

My wife found St John's Wort reasonably effective but didn't buy it in tablet form, she bought the pure herb (dried) and made infusions from it. We rarely buy herbal tablets, we normally buy the herb in a pure (or essential oil) form, that way we know the exact content and concentration of what we're using. Some herbs we buy dried, others we grow and then either dry or freeze, depending on the herb.

I would also suggest going to a herbalist for hypericum rather than buy tablets or tinctures from stores like H&B.

There are many studies that have been done.....just go on to google scholar and google hypericum and depression anf you will see a plethora of studies.

Yes, indeed. In my own experience, liquid/tincture is always more effective for me than tablets. As is, of course, pure herbs.

I have done a good little bit fishing around. Anything by Solgar, Higher Nature or Biocare are usualy trust worthy - problem is these companies only sell SJW or Hypericum in tablet form. There are many companies that sell SJW and Hypericum in the form I need, some even with the 900mg/4% qauntity that I desire - problem is I have no experience with these products/companies.

Just wondering if any of you guys do? Or even better - which products (if any)have worked for you?

On the subject of St. John's Wort, I am about to start taking it in tablet form, but already take Royal Jelly capsules as well.

As far as I can tell from online research these two things can be taken together, but I was wondering if anyone on here can confirm that, or knows any reason why they couldn't?

Thanks 🙂
