Does anyone know any natural remedies for eczema? I've had it literally all my life now and I'm getting really fed up. Most people seem to 'grow out of it' but mine has got worse year by year. I've lost count of how many times I've been to my GP about it but I'm only ever given steriod creams which are really not good to use long term. I saw a dermatologist about 10 years ago who thought my skin reacts to water, which is impossible to avoid especially in my job! I would love to know any tried and tested remedies anyone has, thanks x

Buteyko Breathing Method for Eczema

Look into breathing and eczema- like asthma, eczema can be related to overbreathing, and low levels of carbon dioxide in the body tissues. This can lead to immune cells called mast cells being overstimulated, (among many other effects) releasing histamine and causing itchiness. Getting your breathing under control can help a lot. Look into the Buteyko Breathing Method.:)

Hi, eczema's one of those conditions that doctors really can't find an answer to so you'd have nothing to lose by trying some alternative treatment.
As a homeopath I would of course recommend homeopathy but the facts are that most people that consult me with eczema find some improvement if not complete cure, with the treatment, even when they've had it all their lives. It may not be an over-night cure but if you're able to stick with it for some months, it could be worth it and the results are often permanent or long lasting.
Similarly, other treatments- like acupuncture for example, could help. This is because the treatment's based on rebalancing energy-as is homeopathy- and it's this imbalance that manifests as the physical symptoms. So you're treating 'from the inside, out'.
There are lots of other things you can use depending on the symptoms you have, which would help at least although possibly don't offer a cure, e.g. hemp oil (or in the form of a cream), aloe vera, vitamin supplements, changes in diet.......but as you've had it so long you may feel you've exhausted them all. Hi Serenity

Just a thought do you find that your eczema flares up if you eat a lot of dairy products? I used to have really bad eczema arms, legs, face, neck and sometimes in the head and yes the drs love to prescribe steroids...but I found a change in diet, I cut out a lot of dairy and found the eczema improved. I have seen various creams in health food shops but haven't tried them. A friend tells me that marigold ointment is good - but perhaps there are people here who are qualified aromatherapists who might have some suggestions.

Best wishes

Yes calendula (marigold) cream can be soothing and hypercal (hypericum and calendula) cream works for some people- depends on the symptoms really. You can buy either of them over the counter in many pharmacists or order them from a homeopathic pharmacy. Hom

Hi Serenity

One of the best things for dealing with eczema is to avoid foods you are intolerant to - particularly dairy products, which is the most common. You don't need to test for it initially, just avoid all milk products - including yoghurts, cheeses, and most processed foods - check labels for whey, milk solids, casein, cream, etc - see here - butter may be all right but it is best to avoid it for a fortnight and if there is an improvement to your eczema outbreaks, then add butter back in and see if there is a change (get worse again). You can use other milks like almond, quinoa, rice and oat milk instead if you need to (buy from healthfood shops or some supermarkets), but I'd avoid soya for the time being.

The other thing is to consume essential oils - that is Omega-3 and Omega-6 oils - they are essential to the functioning of every cell in your body including your skin and your brain. O-3s are mostly from oily fish - ocean salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines, and fresh (not tinned) tuna - so eat these 3 times a week. O-6 oils include Evening Primrose or Borage (starflower) oils. Not only are these good taken as capsules but they can be pricked and the oil gently rubbed into affected skin areas. The alternative is to consume flaxseed oil (it must be fresh and kept in the fridge to stop it from going off) - this must not be heated but can be taken off the spoon as is, drizzled on salads, or combined in home-made smoothies (no milk products!).

Oats and brown rice are soothing - oats can even be added to the bathwater (put some in a bag and hang it below the hot tap while running the bath. As mentioned, calendula creams are helpful to some people, but the best way is to sort out your food intake first. A useful book is Holford's Solve your Skin Problems. A registered Nutritional Therapist will help you enormously with this problem.

Hope that helps.

I use a Vitamin E oil from Holland and Barratt ( its more like a Gel) its very thick and sticky so I mix it with Vaseline or a base oil like Grapeseed and apply it to my daughters skin - if her skin is very dry I use the vaseline and its much improved after 48 hours or if its not too dry I use the base oil.

It seems to act like a barrier and is very good.

Manuka Honey applied directly to the skin is also very good but, it was just too sticky for my daughter 🙂

Other things I use for when its not so dry is Nelsons Burns cream ( its not just for cream for burns ) its contains echinacea and other healing herbs

Lastly , if its on your hands, Graphites Cream is very good.

As you can see I have spent a fortune trying to find the right cream Lol

Hi Serenity, 🙂

The problem with treating eczema is if you don't know what's causing it, it's going to keep coming back. It could be something as simple as changing the detergent and softener you sue to wash your clothes. A friend of mine is allergic to softeners and uses a small amount vinegar (softens clothes) in her rinse cycle Foods high in saturated fats (fried foods, red meat) can aggravate eczema too and there are also other underlying causes as well. I'm surprised your doctor didn't look into this when you went. I'd definitely ask your doctor to take some test. I hate to say this but the medical community is becoming very lazy:mad:

I agree it can be down to shampoo / detergets etc

we now use Eco Balls for washing the clothes which have saved a lot of money and wash the clothes nicely.

Also, If you can remove anything containing perfume as this can aggrevate the skin.

For some people its a lack of Essential Fatty Acids that cause the problem ( ie omega 3/6) .

Hope this helps

Emollient creams like Aqueous cream and paraffin based products can be used as soap substitutes . The main stay of eczema treatment is emollients LOTS of it very often.Steroid creams should only be used short term if possible .

Of course stress can be a factor in eczema (as in so many other illnesses) so some stress management techniques may be helpful. EFT may be helpful (or reiki or hypnotherapy!)

You could try coconut oil. I have heard this really does help the skin out greatly.

Foderma serum helps with eczema. It brings back the moisture to the skin so it can begin to heal. I use this serum along with Aquaphor and it works. It will not cure eczema but it does work on my baby's face and body and I think it prevents having sometimes really bad flare-ups and I'm glad I found this serum.
