Hi people
I'm off to a big travel trip to South America, and staying a while in the Amazon jungle in Peru.
I am going to see my local GP to check on my vacinations but I know they will try and prescribe me anti- malaria tablets.
I would like to buy homeopathic anti malaria tablets.
I went on the helios website and they said that they were not allowed to sell them anymore under new legislation, that they must refer to my GP!
Please help and advice I don't want to have to take anti -malaria tablets from my GP!
Any advice welcomed!
Thanks, kindly 🙂
Hi there, my advice to you would be to ring a local (registered) homeopath and explain your situation. It is probable that they will be happy to arrange an appointment to see you, discuss the issue and prescribe some relevant remedies. It may well meet your needs and be money well spent.
(I would not actually phrase it as wanting 'anti malaria' pills but use some different words! Homeopaths are not permitted to officially claim that they can prescribe anything preventative, especially in connection with vaccinations etc prescribed by doctors).
HTH but you can pm me if any further query. Hom
Thanks Hom will do! ta
Hi Lazzaris
If you are going into a known malarial (anopheles) mosquito area I would very much hesitate to do so without antimalarial protection, see and see here. The illness can develop from just a single bite and it is seriously debilitating - I have nursed patients with it and even lost a couple of friends from it ("Oh, I'm all right. I've lived here for years and haven't got it yet"). One can be lucky to miss it - but not always.
If it were me I'd definitely err on the side of caution in spite of the antimalarials not being very nice. Local knowledge is important - the mosquitos become resistant to some of the drugs and you need to know what works locally. Malaria is not the only from mosquitos either.
If however it is not a serious risk then there are some precautions I'd follow added to what your homeopath will advise.
At the end of our stay there, a Sri Lankan lady advised me many years ago that taking a multivitamin/multimineral with at least 50mg of each B vitamin (50 microgms B12) in it, along with about 800mg calcium for a month before and during your stay in the area will help. I happened to be taking this at the time, while my husband wasn't, and I had very few bites while he got bitten all over and his bites all festered and took weeks to heal. Normally in the past he'd not been attacked and I'd be eaten alive!
The other thing is advice from a friend who worked in Florida. Apparently those who work in the parks dept (both male and female) protected themselves from bites by spraying Avon's Skin-so-Soft all over - not sure why! (I have some put by in case I happen to be going somewhere tropical!) Neem or eucalyptus oils are also said to be good as a deterrent.
Also make sure you have clothes to cover up arms and legs in the evenings - especially the ankles (a favourite place to get bitten).
Some wise precautions before you go can make all the difference to having an enjoyable trip.
Hope you have a wonderful time:)
