Just got a query.
I bought some homeopathic remedies over the counter in my local chemist. I get regular migraines so bought Silicea (6c) - which is recommended for long term conditions (30c is recommended for a sudden onset of the migraine but I couldn't find this dose). The dose on the tube recommends that you take 2 pills 6 times in the first day and then 2 pills 4 times a day for 5 days after. Since I want to take this remedy to prevent a migraine happening - what dosage do I take on a regular basis ? I'm guessing if I stop taking it - the migraines could occur again.
Thanks,
Happygirl 😀
RE: Homeopathic doses
Hi HappyGirl
From what I know of Homeopathy (I'm not a homeopath myself but I know one), you shouldn't take any particular remedy on a continuous basis for preventative purposes.
If you continually take a remedy then, in homeopathic terms, you end up proofing the remedy. What I mean by this is that because the remedy is designed as treating like with like, you are in effect treating yourself with a low dose of something that would cause the issue. If you don't actually have the issue and you take the remedy continuously then you may end up giving yourself the issue by doing so, and this is what is meant by "proofing" it.
Not all remedies are available over the counter in 30C doses. I would recommend you book in to see a homeopath who will look at the whole picture of your issues and will be able to tell you if the remedy you have chosen is the correct one for you and also provide the correct dosage.
Although some homeopathic remedies are sold over the counter, homeopathy doesn't quite work in the same way as saying "I have this symptom, so I need remedy X to treat it". The information you get in the little lookup books in the shops where they sell the remedies can only be a general guide. To get a true idea of what remedy you really need, a homeopath will look at your "picture", i.e. what are the root causes of your issue and what type of personality you are etc.
Hope that helps.

RE: Homeopathic doses
Hi,
Thanks for your advice Energylz. I did see a homeopath and he gave me some pills to take but they didn't work. I did speak to him and he told me that he didn't want to give me another dose until I see him again which is in about 6 weeks time. In desperation I bought the Silicea (which matches my personality type as well as being good for migraines) in order not to take pain killers. The homeopath seemed to be happy for me to take the silicea but I'm not sure how lond to take it for.
RE: Homeopathic doses
Have spoken with my girlfriend who knows a little more about this than I do...
When taking the remedy, it might not have worked because the correct dosage wasn't taken, or you may need a totally different remedy; this is why you need to see your homeopath again so that he can look again at the general picture.
Also have you considered eliminating certain foods out of your diet. Common migraine inducing foods are cheese/dairy, MSG (monosodium glutamate), Red wine, Coffee, Tea, Vinegar, white sugar, white flour, tinned foods, fried foods, cucumber, cabbage, cauliflower, spinish, spices (coriander is the worst for my girlfriend), sweets/chocolate. There may be others specific to yourself.
A good book to read is "Migraine and Epilepsy" by Jan de Vries.
Also as a preventative take a look at Bidor tablets by Weleda. They do two strengths, a weaker one as a general preventative and a stronger one for acute symptoms.
Some other useful techniques are reducing stress through breathing exercises, walking in fresh air etc. rubbing around the joint of the thumbs (imagine the thumb is a chicken drumstick and your rubbing the fleshy part), there are others, but I can't describe them all here.
You may also want to look at keeping a diary of what you are doing on a day to day basis and try and determine what/if anycommon things/emotionalissues are happening just prior to the onset of migraine. For a lot of women, PMT can be a cause. If the trigger appears to be something emotional then there are therapies that can help you deal with these.
Most importantly, don't take homeopathic remedies as a preventative on a continuous basis otherwise you will end up proving (spelt right this time ;)) the remedy as already described.

RE: Homeopathic doses
Hello
You are bringing up a lot of issues in your post about the silica! As a homeopath I can only say that the potency and dose of remedies used is a complex thing and best decided by a homeopath. Over the counter remedies are best used for short term acute conditions. However, if you want to use the silica before the next appt, it would beadvisable to take just one pill when you have a migraine and see if it helps. If it does, don't take any more until the pain returns and if it doesn't, just take one or two more pills over a few hours. If still no change, it probably isn't the remedy for you. Better still, check with your homeopath, how best to take them.- (The dosage given on the bottles by the manufacturersis often thought by homeopaths to be higher than is necessary). Least is best!
