Hi, I'm looking for some reliable information about the use of evening primrose oil supplements for post menopausal issues, such as hot flushes and vaginal dryness. My concern is the possibility of increasing the oestrogen levels inappropriately (even if the 'symptoms' suggest possible low oestrogen levels). Does anyone know if EPO has been shown to do this? Thanks. Hom

I take primrose oil everyday, my mum does also . I am no expert of womens menopause but my mum didn't stop her period cycle till mid 50's, she is 65 now and has had no symptoms of the menopause .

The thing is for 40 years she has consumed a pure and natural diet . For some it would seem extreme, but for my mum her way of eating has entertained fasting and all that jazz ...

Perhaps the women's menopause transition works well or smoothly on a pure diet . (like with most things)

Thanks for that. It sounds like your Mum is really healthy. My only reservation in giving this advice to anyone (I'm a homeopath) is, as I say, could it possibly increase oestrogen levels too much.. I'm just not sure of the evidence, if any. Hom

Sadly there is little evidence that EPO helps in menopausal symptoms. It only feeds onto hormone synthesis by a highly indirect route (it at all) and there is no evidence I have been able to find that it will cause inappropriate oestrogen levels. However if you have been following the thread I started about placebo effects.....I don't rule out the fact it could help your Mum without causing any major health risks.

However it DOES interact with Warfarin so if your Mum is taking that she must not take EPO. Hope that helps
