Hi,
Firstly my partner has just found out he has a dust mite allergy, does anyone know of any cures or preventions? So far we are looking at covers for bedding and spray (any recommendations or links would be welcome!). Are there any natural remedies can help aid or stop itching?
Then for myself I suffer a bit with energy and feeling fed up in the winter. I have a SAD lamp which I do believe works, I use during the day at work. Is there anything I can take for my mood, I've taken 5HTP at bedtimes, which is quite expensive. I have also been having symptoms of a cold for about a month off and on. I eat healthy and do Yoga.
Thanks!
Hi Jotravels 🙂
Has your partner been referred to an allergy specialist? This doctor will have the most cures and benefits for him and will also monitor him closely.
Dust mites arem't really the problem, it's their excretement. And dust mites aren't only in the bedding, they exist in carpets, cushions, pillows and couches too. It may be you will have to probably get rid of the pillows and mattress you're using now. There is a polyurethane coating that can be put on a mattress as well as one that can be placed on the mattress and easily removed and washed.
Dust mites seem to thrive in high humidity areas - a dehumidifer might help if the humidity is high in your home.
It could be too that your partner has a low immune system which seems to cause allergens more. Again, a doctor is best to look at and diagnose this. Your partner could also look at taking a multi-vitamin (not synthetic) which includes vitamin c and bioflavonoids as well as other antioxidants. It should also contain a vit B complex which works as a team to enhance immunity as well as minerals and essential fatty acids (GLA). If your partner is or will be taking a multivitamin or other supplements, he should tell the doctor exactly which ones he's taking.
Herbs that strengthen the immune system are garlic, astragalus, echinacea, mullein leaf, wild cherry bark and horehound. But again before taking these, your partner should talk to the doctor first.
If you google 'mayoclinic dust mites' there's some good information there - and if you google 'dust mite prevention', there's alot of great info for you to gather.
Thanks for your response. The problem being we don't in all honestly have that much faith in the doctors, his had the symptoms for three years and they just give him anti histamines! Only through our own research and pushing have they finally said he has dust mite allergies. They tested him for food tolerances and said he was fine. I believe in natural cures and am trying to find him a good homeopath and Chinese medicine doctor to test/cure him.
We have only been told this week about the dust mite allergies and are planning on either getting mattress covers, duvet covers and pillow covers and a natural spray for the sofa (we have all wood flooring thankfully!). We might even buy all new silk bedding, including pillows and duvet (which are quite expensive) and are in the need of a new mattress so will probably get an anti-allergy one also. I'm looking at buying a streamer for the sofa also.
I've been told stinging nettle and eye bright are good for the itching too.
I will look into your recommendations and links, thank you!

Catnip for Dust Mites
Use catnip essential oil to spray around house or just make a strong tea. Its a potent dust mite repellent. See this study on dust mites:
Study shows that Nepeta cataria catnip exhibits potent repellent
To boost immune system during winter, eat ****ake mushroom daily ...one a day will make a difference.
There's a lot more you can do of course, but these two simple steps are easy and effective and inexpensive.
Thank you very much! I have been given a list of herbs from two herbalists also so lots to research and try out!
Can you recommend anywhere in UK to buy herbs or extract(tincture)?
Thanks!

Vitamin C
2 years ago I bagan taking big amounts of vitamin C as the only remedy I found for tooth enamel. I saw that an American Chemist reccommended and nobody could give me a remedy that worked. It was so bad that sometimes I noticed like sand in my mouth and it was parts of my teeth, reluctantly I began taking 5 grams a day of vitamin C (notice that multivitamins usually have like 200mgs or less). Well the first thing I noticed was that like 2 weeks after I began I didn't have allergies (dust mite is the worst) that I have always had and sometimes is worse than others.. I was on a trip and tried to find how suddenly I didn't have allergy and at the same tiem my acne had receided (I'm 40). And the only thing different was vitamin C.
I notice that when I forget to take it for 4 or 5 days allegry slowly comes back, far less intense than before, but comes back, same when I take less than that amount. And believe me sometimes I feel so good and breath so well that I forget for days, suddenly I realize that I haven't been taking it. To take that much is difficult in pills form, so I take the powder form, and following the advice of that chemst that says that it is more bioavailable when mixed with bicarbonate I do it that way. Usually I take it like 3 tiems a day, a third of a teaspoon with the same amount of bicarbonate, and a third of a glass of water let it fizz and then remove and dirnk. The only adverse effect of vit. C is if you take too much at the same time it can cause diarrea, but with this amounts it won't.
When on a trip I take capsules with me to substitute the powder for some of them but its not good for my stomach to take many pills whether I have discovered that when I have stomach discomfort the mix of bicarbonate and Vit c is the best thing you can take. And by the way no more sand in my mouth and my tooth are stronger than ever.
Look for Linus Pauling investigations on vit C I discovered many interesting things there, though I didn't believe the antihystaminic effect it works.
I can't find it easy so I buy in iherb where they have the lowest prices I've seen and it lasts a lot this is the brand I use, though I have tried others, but have found this the cheapest and good quality this is the link
NutriBiotic, Ascorbic Acid, Crystalline Powder, 16 oz (454 g) - iHerb.com
or if you don't want to mix it this other comes mixed, I have tried it but prefer to do the mix myself
NutriBiotic, Sodium Ascorbate, Crystalline Powder, 16 oz (454 g) - iHerb.com
as I told you it can take up to 2 weeks to work but it does it's been years now since I finally don't take any antihystaminics
