touchy
oooh kaskarino i think someone touched a raw nerve, regardless of the fact that mastica gum can only be produced in the south of chios i'm afraid the turks use it quite extensivley not only in turkish delight!, its what gives turkish ice cream its distinctive texture. in answer to your original question yes i have heard of mastic gum, i first came across it in phillp mansels book, "constantinople" where he talked of esma sultans wealth coming from from mastic groves she owned on the island of chios, i had to search elswhere to find what it actually was.
I bought mastic gum in the Greek grocery near my house, but don't know what it is exactly. I know it comes from a tree, but does anyone know what dishes it is used in or what it tastes like?
I live in Cyprus and Mastic is used for so much. The resin is used for chest complaints, melted down into hot olive oil. It's also used for cooking, ice cream, chewing gum, toothpaste and body and face products. The mastic oil is extremely good for lots of ailments. Its fantastic and should be used more.
