Hi there

I have an 8 month old baby, who doesn't seem to need sleep. I think there is a possibility that he may be hyperactive also. Someone has recommended using california poppy tincture, but I can't find any information about whether it is safe for babies of Dylan's age, and if so, what dosage should be given.

Any advice from herbalists would be welcomed, if you need more information please ask.

Thanks very much, Donna.

Until I can see some evidence that there is nothing in the tincture that the baby will ingest which is harmful, I cannot recommend it. Two things spring instantly to mind:

(a) If it's a Bach flower remedy, remember that the medium used is brandy - and you may be as well giving your baby brandy from a teaspoon, or gripe water (which is alcohol)! (I can talk - my dad used to give me Drambuie from a teaspoon to get me to sleep! Now look at me!!!)

(b) Remember that opium comes from poppies.

Being an aromatherapist I'd recommend the following:

Use one teaspoon of grapeseed oil, and one drop (no more) of mandarin essential oil blended together. Use this mixture to gently and rhythmically massage the baby, which should respond to the gentle massage. Place one drop of mandarin essential oil on a cotton wool ball and place this on the radiator in the baby's room, so the oil is diffused gently into the room.

Agree with Chris's comments. Don't be fooled into thinking that because it's natural it's not harmful and obtain some proefessional advice- especially for such a young baby. Hom

thanks guys. the one i was thinking of using was the viridian herbal tincture. ive already tried the aromatherapy approach with both mandarin, and lavender, to no avail :(. i am doing this every night, the ,massage, after bath and before bed. I have used reiki also, but he seems to sleep worse after it. If anyone has any other suggestions, they will be gratefully received. I'm getting desperate after 8 months with not one decent nights sleep :(.

Have you thought of a gauze bag of dried hops popped in his pillow?

Hi Donna , welcome to HP

A child who won't sleep is exhausting for everyone. I can well understand your quest for something that might help.

Emotional Freedom Technique is a tapping technique that has produced some amazing results for all sorts of problems - look up about EFT and [DLMURL="http://www.emofree.com/Press-Releases/insomnia-relief-no-drugs.htm"]here[/DLMURL] and you can download the basic instructions for free from the website too.

For a therapist near you, you can try [DLMURL="http://www.aamet.org/practitioner_list.php?bytype=yes&pid=3"]here[/DLMURL] - and be aware too that you can be directed through a session over the phone. You'd need to check with the therapist that they are able to do this, if this is what is wanted, and that they have experience with helping children.

Hope you manage to get sorted soon.

All the best

It isn't a Bach flower remedy 🙂

But...Bach remedies are perfectly safe to give to small babies, but they should not be given straight from a stock bottle (as bought from the shop) but in a treatment bottle. This is two drops of required remedy/s in 30 mls of spring water, then give 4 drops from treatment bottle 4 times daily.

If a baby was under medical care for prematurity or illness and receiving medication then it would be wise to simply let medics know. (That said the remedies can be used alongside allopathic drugs an exception being those to help "treat" alcoholism.)

Hope you don't mind me clarifying that! I agree thought that you are so right about being cautious where little ones are concerned if you don't fully understand what you are using!

In that case I agree with the hop pillow. Lavender isn't really for use on boys. Also try using petitgrain or neroli instead of the mandarin.

Or you could try the brandy or Drambuie...

You could try homeopathy. It's safe for everyone, young children usually respond very quickly and it will bring things back into balance. -Unless of course, you're 'blessed' with a child who naturally needs very little sleep! Is there anyone else in the family that also sleeps very little? One consolation is that usually though, babies go through different stages and none of them last too long. Things could be quite different in a few months time! Good luck! Hom
