Hiya!
Just a daft question (as always!!)
If you buy an oil that says that it is 'blended', do u have tp blend it further b4 u use it??

The reason I ask is that I have a small bottle of Neroli oil and it says on the front that it is blended. On the box it says that it is already blended for ues (or something like that!) BUT on the bottle it says 'do not use undiluted'?????

RE: Blended oils

Hiya Trinity,
Neroli is one of the more expensive oils to buy, so unless you spent a small fortune or have an incredibly small bottle, it is probably already blended in a carrier oil.
It should say on it something like 10% Neroli oil blended in 90% Jojoba oil. In which case you can just use it as is.
If it says on it 100% pure Neroli essential oil, then you will have to blend it in a base oil.

RE: Blended oils

Hi Trinity

The above is correct, although I wouldn't necessarily say Neroli costs a small fortune, there are more expensive oils. You can buy it reasonably priced from a good trade supplier. Bear in mind it will last you a very long time.

What you have is probably a 5% dilution. That means they have filled a 10ml bottle with carrier oil and added approx 10 drops of Neroli to it. I saw some such oils the other day, blended and saying do not use neat. It is very bad and a good supplier would make sure the labelling was correct. On this same shelf was a bottle of 'basil' essential oil which smelled suspiciously like Fennel, there was no way it was Basil. I do get a bit on my soapbox i am afraid![sm=soapbox.gif]

If you further blend the Neroli Blend that you already have, say for massage, then you are ending up with a minute amount of Neroli in the blend.

So, it is an economical way to buy Neroli. You find Jasmine and Rose often sold in the same way. Aromatherapists don't usually use them. Hope that helps.:D

RE: Blended oils

Sorry for the multiple posts!!!!

It says on the box 'Enjoy the benefits of *brand* EO for massage or in your bath. This oil is ready blended in a natural base oil'?????

Then on the bottle it says 'do not use undiluted on the skin'??????

Hmmm!........

RE: Blended oils

The thing with pre-blended oils is that they only have a limited shelf life, probably three to six months, assuming that they are fresh when you buy them. Undiluted essential oils often have a year or more shelf life and you just blend them as you go along.

The label about not using essential oils undiluted on the skin is probably a standard one that they put on all their bottles and is obviously wrong in the case of pre-blended oils.

Once you know you like an oil, best to buy it unblended, so that you know exactly to what concentration you are blending it and the quality of the carrier oil.

RE: Blended oils

Trinity, if you love Neroli (as I do myself) then wait till you smell the real thing! I checked prices today, you can get the pure oil for about £11. Let me know if you need recommendations for suppliers.

Re shelf life of oils: Not all oils last for a year. Citrus oils usually go off before that and it all depends on how often they are opened, where they are stored and how much is in the bottle. The more space - the more chance of it going off.

Oils such as Rose, Jasmin etc can last a long time, as Sandalwood etc.

RE: Blended oils

Thanks Candie.

Do u buy your oils online?

I only usually buy mine from Holland and Barrett (is that really crap????!!)

I had some Tisserand oil from Champneys but that is only because I went there!

I also had some quality oils from Photobotanics (???) but again, thats only cause I visited the chamomile farm (what a lovely day that was.)

When I buy from H+B I do always check the latin descriptions tho-is this enough to guarantee a quality oil??

PM me if u think that we are boarderlining on advertising (or slander!!!!)

Thanks [sm=1kis.gif]

RE: Blended oils

Hiya, you are funny. Nicely grounded me thinks....:D

Anyway, is that place you visited in Southport? Coz if so have heard of it and they are good so you are okay there. Not sure about Holland and Barret, thing is with them they know nothing. Ask them a question about something and they say 'sorry we can't give advice!' Durgh![:@]

I suggest (and this has come up before) that you go to the ATC website. Aromatherapy Trade Council.

All their suppliers are vetted and you can't go wrong. Personally use Absolute Aromas and Essentially Oils.

Good luck Chuck!;)
