RE: Anemia

Hi Myjosette

Yes, I have suffered with anaemia since my teens. Firstly, there are different brands of iron tablets available from your Doctor. I would strongly advise you to go back and explain your side effects and ask for another brand that your Doctor thinks you may tolerate better. Iron absorbs much better if taken with Vitamin C - so make sure any tablets you have are either combined with Vitamin C or you take it with a drink of fresh orange juice or some other drink high in Vitamin C. Eat as many dark green leafy vegetables as you can - spinach is my favourite - add baby leaf spinach to your salads as you will get more iron from it if it isn't cooked. Make sure your diet is as healthy and as balanced as it can be. Eggs have iron too, but should be eaten in moderation. If you are a meat eater, I think the red meats have a lot of iron (but I'm a struggling veggie going back to meat, but can't manage any red meats yet - don't think I ever will!), but red meats should be eaten in moderation too. Some other iron sources: Dried Apricots, Liver, Fish has a bit I think too. Check out breakfast cereals that are fortified with iron and finally for pleasure, a good quality dark chocolate high in cocoa solids has iron (yippeee!), I would advise you try Green & Blacks as they make excellent chocolate and you can get it organic too. Have a few squares a day as a treat! And finally, when you become anaemic it can take quite a while to get your blood levels back up again, so have patience and keep eating those greens!

Good luck and keep well
