Hi to everyone. I need some urgent advice. Yesterday I gave a lady a back neck and shoulder massage. She had no contra indications to having a treatment but she has suffered many niggly health complaints over the years. She said she found it very hard to relax. She appeared to enjoy the treatment and went away saying she felt very floaty. However today I have had a message left from her on my answer machine saying she had a terrible nights sleep and today feels terrible, as if everythings dropping. She has asked me to ring her back but I just wanted to get some advice/support from folks on here to get my head straight about what to say to this lady. I have been giving massages for 9 years but have only now decided as a single mum to set up my own business working from home massaging clients. I have had some wonderful feedback which is boosting my confidence, and last week a reporter from my local paper came for a massage which she said was wonderful and that will be put in as a review feature next week. I know this is probably a one off but I feel low to think that maybe one of my massages may have caused someone distress. Any advice welcome.
RE: HELP!
Hi Purplelight
Please do not worry, everyone is different and you cannot cover al eventualities when advising someone how they might feel in the following couple of days following a treatment.
She will probably feel a lot better tomorrow when her body has finished adjusting to the treatment you gave her, I would advise her to drink lots of water to clear out the toxins you have release and just try to stay relaxed, people who find it difficult to relax have a lot of general tension and as it releases if does not feel right to them as they are not used to feeling normal 🙂
RE: HELP!
Hi Purple light, dont dispare to much because as time goes by and the more people we treat the higher the chance of treating someone who reacts adversley to your treatment.(one in a thousand)
Some people no matter how carefull we are may react at a pysco-emotional level.
Or sometimes we may work a little to deep even though client feedback was given at the time.
The clues come from the history take stage and as you say she has suffered many niggles over the years and your massage just served to focus her internal healing in a way that was not expected by either of you.
Explain to her this is a very rare ocurance and advise that on these rare occassions ice can be used to take the bite out of any theroputic inflamation.
You are not alone, though as therapists working alone we can often feel it.
