Has anyone had any experience of treating anyone with AS with massage?

RE: Ankylosing Spondylitis
Not personally I am afraid, but my Tutor used to treat someone with this condition regularly. She said the lady was in great pain and it helped her alot. Sorry I can't remember any further details, it was some years ago, but you don't forget a condition name like that in a hurry!

RE: Ankylosing Spondylitis
Hi Lesley,
I recently treated a guy with this to a VERY, VERY gentle OSM & I omitted a couple of the moves. He'd had Sports massage in the past which he found helped and he runs a lot- but to be honest it scared the willies out of me a bit. He's not had any problems AFAIK and he was interested in having another massage - but its early days for me, so I'll probably refer him on to someone with more experience.
Sorry if this doesn't help too much

RE: Ankylosing Spondylitis
Hi Lesley AS very popular disease A form of arthritst massage is very good for this types of conditions do not be afraid to rub a little Something Galeon said back a few centuries ago cant quite remember now but treat with care but do very definately do treat. with massage. Aromatherapy oils blended with care will help give your treatment just that added touch that is so appriecated by the clients.
RE: Ankylosing Spondylitis
hi have to agree with lion heart, have treated 2 ladies on a regular basis. I used a massage routine for arthritis and blended oils which included clary sage or cedarwood, i also added a touch of tiger balm to my fingertips when i thought it would benefit. I found after the first one that i was able to give a deeper but still soft massage. The feedback has been brilliant! It is worthwhile doing as any pain relief they get and any care and attention you can give them is so greatly appreciated!
Let them be your guide and you wont go far wrong!
Good luck & enjoy!
hugs, DC
RE: Ankylosing Spondylitis
Thanks everyone. I've had contact from the man's wife, who tells me he would like some treatments, but she has told me he will contact me directly for an appointment, so I will let you know how I get on if he decides to go ahead.

RE: Ankylosing Spondylitis
Just to let you know that my client was very happy with the treatment.
He decided to start off with a neck, back and shoulder massage using essential oils. I used a combination of marjoram, black pepper and ginger.
I was going to start off quite gently, but he wanted me to work more deeply, which I did over the muscles.
He was very comfortable afterwards and wants to come back once he's recovered from a minor op that he's having today.
So thanks again for all your input. I felt that having a little knowledge on the problem meant that I could ask him all the right questions.
