Hi guys,

Ok, so I have a client that would like a Sports Massage on her legs
She has Rheumatoid Arthritis, does several fitness classes each week (Kettles, Boot Camp stuff etc)

Four weeks ago she had to stop halfway through a kettles class with extreme pain in her 'right quads area'. The next day there was a long thin bruise down the length the centre of her 'quads area'. No pain the next day, bruise gone two days after that.

Two weeks ago, warm up jog before boot camp, same pain in BOTH quad areas (brought her to her knees apparently). Next day pain gone again and same bruising on BOTH legs (symmetrical), bruise gone after a couple of days as before.

I haven't a clue what this bruising is so I'm really interested in your opinions.

Thanks!
Kerry

Hi Kerry,
I notice you are from Lincoln, I am from Saxilby and specialise in sports injuries, if you would like me to assess your client let me know. Incidently I would check your insurance and qualification to ensure you are able to work on pathological tissue as many sports massage quals dont train you to do this.
hope that helps
regards
BGFL

Thanks for reply and the offer BGFL

I was just looking for an explanation so that I could put my clients mind at rest

My qual is for non path tissue only hence the gap in knowledge, and the need for info to pass on to my client prior to a referral. I am not treating an injury and I am fully aware of my limits as a Therapist (and the limits of my insurance), but I guess it's useful advice to safeguard those that don't.

Thanks again,
Kerry

What type of objective assessments have you done with this lady?

My Father has RA so it rang a bell (believe me I am no expert), a quick Google revealed this:

So sounds like the sensible option would be for your client to see her GP pronto.

There could be serious ramifications if she does have a reduced platelet count. And with RA it is possible. I agree she needs to see her GP asap.

Hi, and thanks for all your replies

Sports therapy - I haven't done any objective assessment as a subjective assessment seemed to indicate damaged tissues, or some underlying medical condition that is not appropriate for me to treat.

Sports massage / Tashanie - thank you both for sharing your experience. I will recommend that my client calls her GP to explain her symptoms and hopefully rule out the low platelets. It may be that there is nothing for her to worry about (and I will of course make her aware of this), but I did feel there was something unusual about this, and because she suffers from RA this complicates thing further.

I'll have a chat with her and give her the options

Kerry
