RE: Baby Massage Books

Hello TherapyWise,

Found these few books that appealed to me, maybe someone will add to the list.

Hands on Baby Massage - by Michelle R. Kluck-Ebbin
Paperback 125 pages; Book and Access edition (March 16, 2004)
Publisher Running Press; ISBN 0762415479

Book Description
Research indicates that massage is beneficial for infants in many ways. By the author of the best-selling Hands on Feet, this 160-page guide explains where and how to safely massage a baby to help relieve colic, irritability, and other common afflictions. It comes with an adorable onesie, a one-piece, snap-on baby garment, preprinted front and back with a colorful design that shows just where to massage for specific results.

Loving Hands: The Traditional Art of Baby Massage - by Frederick Leboyer
Paperback - 144 pages (October 1997) - Newmarket Press; ISBN: 1557043140

A loving treat for both baby and parent:
Frederick LeBoyer is the French obstetrician who pioneered the "gentle birth" process with his first book, "Birth Without Violence." Having succeeded in getting babies born gently, into a dim, quiet, warm environment, he has now taken the logical next step with this book.

Baby massage is a practice begun in India, and simply stated, involves sitting with the baby on your lap and massaging "it" gently with oil. There is very little text in this book - it's mostly photographs, of a beautiful young Indian mother, sitting on the ground with her baby on her outstretched legs. The photographs are sequential and show the various moves - gently tugging at opposite arms and legs, rubbing circular motions on the torso, massaging tiny hands and feet, and so on.

The baby is clearly blissed out in the pictures, as yours will be, too if you try this! And the very act of spending that kind of time in close communion with your baby will elevate your soul as well as the baby's.

I recommend this book to all new parents and give it as a "Welcome to the world" gift when their babies are born.

Baby Massage: The Calming Power of Touch by Alan Heath, Nicki Bainbridge, Julie Fisher (Photographer), Diana Moore
Hardcover: 96 pages; DK Publishing; ISBN: 0789451247

Book Description: Baby Massage offers parents and caretakers a way to calm a restless baby, stop its crying, and help it sleep by using comforting and comfortable touching techniques. Through step-by-step pictures, this illustrated guide makes it simple for anyone to learn and implement massage that can ease problems such as colic and teething. Massage has been proven to enhance babies' and toddlers' brain development, encouraging brighter and happier children. With this increasingly popular art, you can learn routines that can be easily incorporated into everyday care, bathtime, and bedtime.

About the Author: Consulting child psychologist Dr. Alan Heath and health visitor Nicki Bainbridge developed the methods demonstrated in this book at their successful sleep and crying clinics in inner city London. The book features a foreword by Diana Moore, the founder and leading teacher of the Loving Touch Foundation in Oregon, where she trains people to teach infant massage.

Reader Review: This has been one of the best purchases I have made since the birth of my son nine months ago. It has taught me how to massage him in a way that has helped me gain his trust. Not only does it relax him before bed, but it gives us some precious bonding time that can't be matched! I sing his favorite song while I do it, and someday, when he can talk, I'm sure he will sing along. I have suggested this book to all of my 'Mom' friends, and I urge all Mom's (and Dad's) to buy this one!!

The Little Baby Massage Book: Complete With Acupressure and Aromatherapy Hands-On Massage Instruction to Give the Gift of Love and Touch to Your Baby
by Linda Ellen Larson, Stacie Sheridan (Illustrator)

Hiya

The best one I have come across is the first one in the link...

McClure is the lady that is the central focus of the international association for infant massage

Im not sure if you are asking from a qualified pracitioner point of view, considering training or just an interested "lay" baby massage person!!!! I am qualified in BM instruction so if you have any questions just holler....

RE: Baby Massage Books

Hi - this is really useful.

I am currently studying BMI and really enjoying it. I wanted to get an idea from other BMI's what books they use/have used.

Thanks

Hi

I personally love the book by McClure and Peter Walker - I recommend these two when I teach BM. On a deeper level I also like books by Tiffany Field (loads of research material)

Not strictly a baby massage book, but a fascinating and very relevant one nevertheless, is Ashley Montagu's "Touching - The Human Significance of the Skin".
