Hi all

I was just wondering what people's feelings were on baby massage with eo's? My friend has just phoned to ask if I can make her an oil for her 8 week old baby. I told her I would be happier if she bought one from Boots baby range (or somewhere) as you have to be really careful with babies. Does anyone else treat babies? Or when do you wait until?

Thanks
Tracey

RE: Baby Massage

molton brown do a beautiful massage oil specifically for babies...not tested on animals and safe to use....

When teaching my baby massage classes I only ever encourage the mums to use carrier oils, my favourite for these on a baby is Fractionated Coconut (odourless), it is light and absorbs quickly and easily.

Unless Mum is trying to address something specific other than sleeping I would not personally use oils on a baby .....massaging a baby within a set routine will really help baby get off to sleep without anything extra...

dont forget, whatever mum uses, always patch test .....

RE: Baby Massage

hi tracey,

i see you are newly qualified as an aromatherapist and did a distant learning course. i wondered which course you did. although i am ITEC qualified in other therapies, i did do the SNHS aromatherapy course and i dont think they did cover oils for babies and indeed the elderly. i guess thats a major flaw in their course and worth considering.

"For babies and children, always dilute 1 to 2 drops with 1 tsp. Of Vegetable Oil. For babies 0-12 month, use only 1 drop of Lavender, Rose, or Chamomile, diluted in 1 tsp. Of Vegetable Oil for massage or bathing (please, do not use other oils). For infants 1-5 years old, only use non-toxic and non-caustic oils. For children 6-12 years old, use as for adults, but in half of the recommended concentration. " i just lifted this from a website and it corresonds pretty well with what is recommended for babies.

does your friend say why she wants you to make a blend for baby?

(just seen tigerbee's reply... we seem to be thinking on the same lines!)

RE: Baby Massage

Hi there

Thanks for your replies. I studied my course through the Kevala Centre based iin Torquay. There was a brief part about massaging babies but not great detail as you say. If you don't mind me asking, what is the SNHS? Was this gained through going to a college or distance learning? my friend didn't want anything in particular - she's lucky and has a really content baby - sleeps from 9pm until about 6am (sometimes 7am) and she's only 8 weeks old. I think it was just because she knew I had all the oils etc and feels her baby enjoys the massage (which is more than mine ever done when she was tiny).

Thanks
Tracey
