Hi,

I was wondering whether anyone can train as a hypnotherapist via distance learning ? I realise that this may not be the best way but realistically it's one of the few options for me. I'm happy to complete part of the course by visiting a college but I can't do all of the course by going to a college. I did visit the websites of the Hypnotherapy association and the register of hypnotherapists - but the latter website was not very user friendly (crammed with waaaaay to much confusing info) and the training page was down.

I can't really attend a college due to the necessity of working full time as i'm the only one paying for my mortgage etc and also I live in South Wales - I notice that all the colleges I've seen on websites aren't anywhere near here !!

Has anyone done any accredited courses via distance learning ?

Thanks in advance !!

Hi Happygirl,

I'm sure others will have some experience of distance learning courses and let you know their thoughts on the subject !! All i can tell you is that I started Hypnotherapy training this weekend ... and having done just the first two days .... there's absolutely no way I could have learned this by distance learning !!!

I'm being taught by a tutor who's been practicing for 25 years ... the course and teaching is excellent .... but I think I would really struggle if i didn't have the benefit of that experience in front of me and my fellow students to bounce off and share with !!

Also, as Hypnotherapy (like most other complementary therapies) is currently going through Self Regulation, I would be very careful about where i put my money .... will you be able to practice after regulation ???

Have a look at for accredited course providers !!

Hope this helps some !!

Hi Happygirl,

My course is being held on weekends !! It'll take me 9 months to complete, but like you weekdays, because of family and work, weren't possible !! Let us know if you find a course ... there seemed to be a few in South Wales !!

Zodiac School do hypnotherapy and I'm sure they're in Swansea now...

PM me if you want their details. I've got them here somewhere but they also have adverts in Aura magazine every month

There are many hypnotherapy courses held over weekends. I did most of mine on weekends. I could not imagine "distance learning" hypnotherapy.

On my courses, there was practical work where you actually hypnotise someone at least once on every day of each module and each practical session was followed by discussion and feedback of the session. OK, I suppose that with a distance learning course you could hypnotise friends or family members but you would have no critical feedback or advice from this. I feel that not only would you be seriously lacking in practical experience but also that as a result, your confidence in your abilities would be likely lowered, potentially putting you off going into practice.

Yes you can do it via distance learning but you don't get the advantage of experiencing, seeing or doing hypnosis yourself. The National council for Hypnotherapy might be worth checking out as they and othe associations now do externally assessed courses, don't do any course that isn't. For one thing the people doing them are just generating members for their association and when it comes to regulation such qualifications will have little real value. I can think of one such course that is not accepted by the large associations. Don't go on cheapness, but then again some are too highly priced, as are many courses in the profession because of continual professional development.
But somewhere you need to get hands on experience.

Hi happygirl
I'm from South Wales as well (Neath) and I did my training with Elestial Hypnotherapy in Cardiff. The course is accredited with the GHSC and I really enjoyed it. It's held over 4 days, including the weekend.
Chrysalis also hold training courses in Cardiff, and they're accredited by the Hypnotherapy Society - I'm starting to tutor for them this year on their Bristol course. Very excited about it!
Best of luck and feel free to PM me if you want more info.
Sue

Hi

I am starting Hypnotherapy training with QUEST at Regents College in London next month. This is over 10 weekends for practical work and 10 months of home study.

Has anyone here trained with QUEST?

No, I did my training locally but I know a few people who have and have rated it very highly indeed! I would have trained with them if location wasn't such an issue.

Hi,
Distance learning is not enough to make you a good hypnotist, and although you can practise on family and friends, how will you know how to deal with anything that arises - particularly since no two people respond in the same way? You have to be able to think on your feet and adapt to the client and you can only learn that through practice. Most of the pioneers in hypnosis learned by doing first and then studying. Reading and research, experimenting with different techniques can be picked up as you go along, but you need to be in and doing right from the start. You can't learn to ride a bike by distance learning - and the same with hypnosis.
I trained about 12 years ago and did just one intensive week in which we started hypnotising each other from day 1 and carried out complete therapies under supervision following a specific technique until we knew exactly how to steer the client into the direction needed. If you can spare a week or two (holiday perhaps?) and go on an intense practical course, you can do your reading whenever it's convenient.
Good luck!

I agree totally, hence why I am not doing distance learning. I have enrolled to do a college course over a year. Practical therapy cannot be learnt from a distance.

Viable but...

Distance learning could be done but I would worry about the problem of less institutional name recognition. Hypnotherapy courses usually require a lot of interactions but of course this is also limited with distance learning...
