Hi,

I am about to qualify as a hypnotherapist and I am interesting in making my own cds to sell from my website. I just wondered how others do this, is it best to pay a professional to do it or is it possible to make the cds with my own laptop?

Many thanks.

Hi squidges,

Have you considered making your recording available as audio downloads - clients could conveniently listen to downloads on there phones. CD's seem clunky by comparison, and you'd need to pay out for the CD's and sort out cover graphics.

CD's and downloads are both viable options. The important thing though is the quality of the recording. Nobody will want to listen to something that is poor quality or has background noises. With a good quality microphone (or microphones) and recording taking place in a suitable environment, there's no reason you couldn't use a laptop or desktop computer to do the recordings with the right software.

Another thing to consider though is, if you are treating clients with hypnotherapy (and I know a therapist that does this), you may want to record the session and provide the client with a copy of the session on CD as well as keeping a copy of the session for your own records. That can be just a 'backup' in case you should be unlucky enough to get one of those clients (and they do appear occasionally) that makes 'claims' about what occurred during the session (that may be an innocenct claim that you suggested they do something when you didn't, or more serious that they claim you did something to them whilst they weren't aware).

If you do produce CD's you need to consider the material costs, especially if you are going to label the CD's yourself. There are lightscribe CD burners and CD's you can use though they are like greyscale images and can be slow to produce, or sticky labels you print and stick on, but sticky labels can be problematic if they aren't stuck properly (and they look a little unprofessional), or you can get pre-printed custom blank CD's (which you could leave space to write on the title, if you're handwriting is tidy). There's lots of options.

If you're planning on a set series of CD's it may be worthwhile investing some money for time in a more professional recording studio.

I record all my hypnotherapy sessions and provide the client with a cd. I also used to sell CDs from my website but removed this last time I updated my website but am going to be putting this back on my website shortly as mp3 downloads.

For recording sessions, I use a hypnocom connected to my laptop via an external sound card device. Just recording into your laptop will be poor quality. For downloads etc I now use mic that is on a stand with sound shielding around it, it's like a mini/mobile voice recording studio and although the hypnocom recordings are good enough, the quality is much enhanced doing it this way.

My CDs are branded with my practice name, logo, website etc. I use printable CDs, not stuck on cd labels, looks far more professional. The CDs aren't as expensive as you would think although I do buy them 1000 at a time.

You also need to bear in mind that background music that you use has to be not just royalty free but have permission to re-distribute as that is what you are effectively doing by having it on a recording you are selling.

Excellent advice Bannick - squidges, if you DO record your own playback option, CD or otherwise, PLEASE invest in decent recording software and DEFINATELY get a sound shield. I had hypnotherapy in early 2010, and the therapist provided me with a CD to use in my own time. The recording was absolutely dreadful - every 'buh' and 'tuh' was like a gun shot, and whenever the word 'ssslllleeeeeeeeePUH' was mentioned, I was out of trance in a jiffy! It had been recorded onto a laptop, in a kitchen - I could hear a tap dripping in the background.

Decent recordings encourages clients to keep up the good work you will have initiated - I, on the other hand, never went back and have reverted to old 'bad' habits!!! 🙁

I know this is from a while ago but just wanted to say I record my hypnotherapy sessions for my records but do not give them out to the client.

I thought long and hard about this when I started as a hypnotherapist but felt that some of the suggestions I was giving would have more of an effect if the client thought they had thought of them themselves, some say they feel inspired to go and do ****** because it just popped into their heads. I feel if they listened back to the recording they would feel they were being told to do something and this may not have the same empowering effect, so I just say that's a great idea!

Just my thoughts no doubt there are others that would think differently. 🙂

I do have hypnosis downloads available through my site and it is nice when I get an email from paypal to say I have just received funds from somewhere in the world and the cost to me was zero as it is an automatic process. I recorded the sessions on my own computer at home.

I am so glad you re-activated thread as I hadn't seen it. I think the idea of having MP3 downloads is brilliant!! I record mine as MP3 files anyway on a digital voice recorder anyway. Does anyone have a good link for decent royalty free music?

Get a great studio mic from a music shop and make sure everything is silent (as they are very sensitive). Use free software - look up Audacity in a search engine. It does everything you need. Search for royalty-free background music and set this low. Turn up the bass a little on most voices and treble down. Make sure the CDs record in Audio and on Audio CDs not data disks. Many stereos cannot play mp3s from disk. Ensure a disclaimer is in there about not driving and operating machinery. And note that research has not shown any benefit to CDs. I've never used them, partly because they are fixed at a point in time and people are not - the suggestions they need shift as their goals, motivation levels, etc change. But I did record in a band, hence the knowledge!

Well hi there,
I known it has been a while since you posted for any help. But I thought there is no harm in adding my help, if you still need it. 🙂
I own my own recording studios and produce my own music from it. Therefore I have the facilities to record and produce almost anything.
Funnily enough, I have a hypnotherapist who use our facilities frequently to record her own voice over a piece of music we will create especially for her, then we provide her with as many copies on CD as she likes to hand out to her clients, so they can practice at home. We get our CD's professionally duplicated and can produce as many as you like.
Hope this gives you a bit of an insight.
