Hi there,

I'm looking for a hynotherapist to help me with lets say my food issues. I'm not severly overweight but need to loose a couple of stone, I comfort eat due to problems rooting back to my teenage years and its something I just cant crack.

How do I go about finding a qualified hypnotherapist I can trust and not some cowboy?

Many thanks

Angelhales

Hi Angelhales,
As a hypnotherapist myself, there are certain criteria you can look for to help you decide and hopefully get the best therapist for you. I would advise that you look for hypnotherapists that are members of the usual accredited bodies for the profession such as the national council for hypnotherapy, hypnotherapy association or general hypnotherapy register. I would also look for hypnotherapists who specialise in weightloss, some therapists will offer a weightloss programme that will offer you 3 or 4 sessions. I would also ring a few up and see if you can build a good rapport with them and dont be afraid to ask questions. Hope this helps and good luck with find the right therapist for you!

Have you thought about trying to sort out those pass issues it's possible if you could that your comfort eating could be helped or even stopped.

Just an idea that could be worth a try, good luck on what ever you decide to do

Weightloss is one of the most popular treatments for hypnotherapists nowadays due to the positive press it has received in the past couple of years. I agree with Angelcakes regarding looking through the General Hypnotherapy Register and/or National Council websites (amongst others) at their member lists. BUT, first of all, check to see if anyone you know has had hypnotherapy before. Although the accrediting bodies are a safer bet than randomly choosing a therapist from a directory or advert, personal referral is obviously the best route, if possible.

When it comes to the "cowboys" that you mentioned you are worried about, it's rare they manage to join any of these organisations. One trick I've come across from such people is to offer a free consultation where they spend 30-60 minutes convincing you that you need twelve hypnotherapy sessions but if you pay up front then it is discounted and then pressure you into signing up for this. In the unlikely event that you find yourself in this situation then just walk away! If you can't find a hypnotherapist by referral then speak to a few, at least on the phone and see who you feel the most comfortable with.

Thank you for your replies Bannick and Angelcakes, extremely helpful, I have asked around friends and none have used any, only EFT which isnt a route I would like to try yet. I will search out a few and check those things thank you.

Unforunately past issues have been dealt with more aless through various forms of counselling etc Cis so if you can recomend anything else I'd love to hear it? Food is my vice and a comfort to hold me up, its a crutch that keeps me steady and I need to start walking freely!

Hi there, here is a hypnotherapist with a proven track record for weight loss in Kent but you would have to talk to her to 'make a connection' first.
Good luck.

Angel_hales,

I am very new to this forum having just come across it. I am a hypnotherapist. I know your OP dates back to July and you may have already found your Hypnotherapist however I just wanted to add a couple of points to assist if I may.

Weight Loss Hypnotherapy is indeed very good, however direct suggestion will not work for everyone and for some it will only be a temporary measure, I normally find that the weight issue is usually a sympton of something deeper and regression work is required to get to the ISE (Initial sensitising event or root of the issue) once this root has been found and all SSEs have been reframed into their proper context then you will normally find that the weight loss occurs naturally and more importantly will be be permanent. Direct suggestion will work for a bit but the repitition compulsion will come back as will the weight.

EFT is also very powerful and can assist greatly with cravings so please do not rule it out (a lot of Hypnotherapists combine Suggestion / regression / coaching, EFT and NLP into their treatments)

If you are still in the process of looking please enquire about regression along with the other recommendations in answer to your post.

Good luck
Jason
