has anyone tried hypnotherapy with a therapist, and is the effect more pronounced than if using a CD at home?
Hi Kookykel,
I'm a hypnotherapist and obviously I experienced hypnotherapy before and during training as one.
The effect is definitely more pronounced when done with a hypnotherapist as the session(s) will be made to fit you and your circumstances rather than a general session recorded to CD which will be far less specific and the technique(s) used on the CD also might not be the best for you.
Saying that, a lot of people do achieve results from general recorded sessions as well.
PS: I've moved this thread to the mind therapies forum.
thanks :O)
how can i find a good hypnotherapist in the york area? i dont know anyone who can recommend one personally
If you can't find a personal recommendation then check this register:
It's one of (in fact probably the largest) the most reputable of the various regulatory bodies. There are others but with 8000 on their register I would hope you have a few to choose from in your area.
Hi, I am a clinical hypnotherapist so ....
Hypnotherapy is an excellent means of achieving your aims - by actually being with a hypnotherapist where you build a rapport and develop trust together you will gain so much more than just using a CD.
CD's are fine when they are included in the hypnotherapists prescription of treatment - they help to reinforce the necessary suggestions, but this type of CD is not a substitute.
I have tried using CD's as a stand alone method but find that without using them on a regular basis they are not successful. They actually lock you in to their use as they never seem to reach an end of treatment process.
I am sure there are many people out there who can add there thoughts on stand alone CD hypnotherapy both positive and negative.
At the end of the day personal choice and cost will always be a driving force.
For information on clinical hypnotherapy contact the National Council of Hypnotherapists
Good luck with your choice.
I record personal CD's all the time, and have recorded hundreds over the past five years, and had fantastic results. There are pro's & con's for a one to one session, and there are pro's & con's for CD's.
There is a need for this market, and quite a large need for this market in actual fact. Some people are housebound because of their fear or problem. Some people are embarrassed, some people cannot find a therapist close by (in foreign countries) Some don't have time, and some find it cheaper. So quite a lot of good reasons to try a CD. It is probably more comfortable at home as well. Some people just want to give it a try without getting too involved.
I never try and convince people...... other than give these reasons, some would pick a one to one session every time that's great, a personal CD or pre-recorded CD is not for them. Hope this helps.
Being there with the hypnotist is much better because we can be specific to you. A CD is obviously much more general. When I hypnotise I don't use any scripts either, which means my clients always get what they nrrd personally.
Best wishes
Paul

You don't have to be with the hypnotist to get a personal touch. I have done CD's after an email chat about what was needed. But only fo smple things liek weight loss and smoking.
It is MUCH better to see a hypnotherapist personally f you have an issue you need help with
I try not to use scripts either - but I have been known to use a script for eg Eriksonian induction where I feel that is needed.
RE finding a good hypnotherapist, I suggest you contact any within reasonable travelling distance, arrange free initial discussion, see how you feel about them when you actually meet. Just as you would if hiring a builder- you wouldn;t just choose the first one who answere the phone. And don;t just pick the nearest- it's not as if you'll be going to them every week for the rest of your life.
Re CDs vs live therapy- look at it this way- wouldn't you prefer to hear your favourite band in a live concert, to just hearing a CD? Even though the concert is one-off whereas the CD you can hear over and over.
The problem with CDs is that they are aimed at numerous people. They have to be inclusive. When you do that, you start using methods that are at a very abstract level. For example, a CD for weight loss is no good if it mentions cutting back on chocolate and the listener is thinking I don't even eat a lot of chocolate, my problem is too much alcohol and cake. Then it tells you to imagine all that lovely exercise while swimming and you can't swim. A therapist tailors everything specifically to your needs and can adapt if you provide feedback.
The second major problem with general CDs is that they are fixed in time. But a person's needs change. A client might have lost a lot of weight since the last session, or they might have gained weight. These things require a flexible, tailored and responsive approach.
CDs have worked for some but these are pretty big problems and the truth is that it is a gamble. If you buy CDs and it works it can be a lot less time and money investment. If it doesn't, you end up spending time and money visiting a therapist. To muddy the waters further, they is a crossover point where a good CD is better than a poor therapist!
Good luck, whatever you decide.
Hey Kookykel,
Hypnotherapy is very effective treatment to came out from various difficult situation.Taking treatment through CDs is not much effective as compared to join regular hypnotherapy classes. If you are in Toronto then I would like to suggest a very popular hypnotherapist Dr. Luke Howard who provide best hypnosis in Toronto.
