Hi,

I'm becoming more interested in hypnotherapy and hope to study it. However I know this is going to sound a weird question to some of you - but what do you consider as the main dfference between meditation and hypnosis ?

Hey HappyGirl!

Great to hear about your interest in Hypnotherapy! I've been teaching people for a fair few years now.

Right, Meditation is more about stilling your mind and quieting your thoughts, whereas Hypnosis is entering a profound state where you work with your uncosncious mind, its not about quitening your mind. You can drift, wonder, listen as you please, while your unconscious takes on suggestion by CD or Hypnotherapist. Its a state that bypasses the conscious mind directly to the unconscious.
Hypnosis, Meditation etc are trances where the brain goes into an altered state of awareness.

Hope this helps HappyGirl

Joseph

Hi both,

Thank you so much for your explanation Joseph. I'll look at the websites you mentioned this weekend, so I can spend some decent time reading about the info. 🙂

After I've done meditation I usually feel good and a bit elated afterwards -however when i've done self hypnosis I feel the same afterwards - neither better nor worse ? I then tend to think that the self hypnosis is "less effective" than meditation - which I guess is wrong but it's based purely on my feelings and emotions afterwards.

Meditation with a mantra (like TM) is very powerful. EEGs show greater communication between different parts of the brain. It also physically alters the brain. I've been doing meditation for about two weeks. I like it much more than self-hypnosis.

Hi Happy Girl
The brain states of someone in meditation or hypnosis are very similar. The main difference is that hypnosis is carried out with some purpose of change - eg weight loss, smoking cessation, reduction of IBS symptoms etc.

During hypnosis, when a trance like state has been achieved (much like the deep relaxation in meditation), the therapy is carried out.

I think it's a marvellous form of therapy, for all types of problems. If you're interested in training, have a look at the General Hypnotherapy Register website for accredited training courses.

All the best 🙂
Sue

Hypnosis really helps. No idea how to study that. But the latest trend is using powerful mind programming audio products. Powerful self mp3 audio helps from losing weight, overcoming poor sleep, or insomnia, to beating stress, quitting smoking and phobias like (fear of) flying, and many many more.
