I just found out I'm about 6 weeks pregnant. I know it's contraindicated to give a pregnant women a hot stone massage. But am I ok performing one being that I am 6 weeks pregnant?
Unless you have any existing complications, issues etc. that your doctor has told you to "take it easy", then giving someone else a massage shouldn't be an issue as long as you're not over-exerting yourself (which you wouldn't want to do even if you weren't pregnant). The only contraindications I can think of around any 'giver' of massage who is pregnant, would be to avoid the majority of essential oils if you use such in your massage, as many of them are contraindicated for pregnant women (some unnecessarily in my personal opinion - but better be safe than sorry).
I don't do Hot Stone massage, so I can't speak from that point of view explicitly, but I'm sure someone else will be able to give a more specific answer in that respect.
At the end of the day though, use common sense... if you're not sure... avoid doing it.
I worked throughout two pregnancies doing remedial massage and reflexology. You are pregnant, not ill - but obviously, if you find you get tired - slow down. I cannot see HSM being a contraindication - unless you are not checking the stone temperatures and get burnt! And Giles is right - some oils are not recommended for use during pregnancy (for safety reasons - I think you would need to be drinking oils in large quantities to actually cause harm!) - so if you are using essential oils, get advice from an aromatherapist. Base oils are not a problem.
