infection and heat do not go together - adding heat to the area could flare it up even more. Is he on antibiotics? I wouldn't work on someone on medication with hot stones - raising the temp affects the absorbtion of drugs etc. You can gradually work up to it over a series of treatments for someone on long term drug use (diabetics etc) but for a one off infection it's easier to just say "wait till you're over it".
When in doubt, don't.
Most of the contraindications for using a sauna/steam room apply to using hot stones - either way, you're raising the temp of the body. Some people will say go have a sauna to sweat out an infection, but that usually results in feeling much worse before you feel better.
ITEC spa treatments syllabus says for sauna/steam ♦ Total contraindications
• Fever • Contagious or infectious diseases • Under the influence of drugs or alcohol • Recent operations • Neuritis • Skin diseases
♦ With medical GP or specialist permission
• Pregnancy • Cardio vascular conditions (thrombosis, phlebitis, hypertension, hypotension, heart conditions) • Any condition already being treated by another practitioner • Diabetics • Medical oedema • Osteoporosis • Arthritis • Epilepsy • Cancer
Best advice from cola - never treat during active infection. Wait until the course of medication is finished, and even then, I would ask to add a few days.
(Having had phlebitis myself about 8 years ago, I would also include that condition in 'total contraindication'!! It was horrid, and I would have bitten anyone who touched me at the time!)
