I have a full time OK job, in a secure company (very important to me!)...but would really like to work less hours., for work life balance.
My request has been refused.

My options were
...to quit and have nothing (no way)
...to look elsewhere (cant find anything)
...to put up and shut up
...to make myself very valuable

I decided to work very hard, so they might not want to lose me..hopefully securing myself the hours I want, a cunning plan!!!!!

Result....my hard work has been noticed,, but not rewarded in the way I would have liked. Lots of praise, put in the spotlight, financial rewards promised, and name mentioned in high places...very nice thankyou
however
the greatest reward for me, would be to drop a day....turning my 50 hr week into a 40 hr (taking travelling into consideration)

Now then...feng shui terms.......any ideas what I can do?

Hi Fleur. 50 hours! flippin heck, how do you fit anything else in. Unfortunately! I can't find anything to help in your situation, there are lots of career boosters and office enhancements, but I can't find anything to lower your workload or feng shui tips to decrease your working week. Would they not consider you job sharing??

Hi Fleur

Sorry can't help on the Feng Shui aspect, but I'm sure there is some legislation about flexible working - may be able to help or the ACAS website.

What reasons did your employer give in refusing your request, is it not possible to appeal?

I've also noticed that you have changed your location on your profile to 'at home..' - it made me smile. Although working 50 hours per week, you mustn't get much time to spend at home! Even reducing to 40 hours, that is still more than full time employment.

Just to clarify..I dont actally work the 50 hours,,,but time out of the home includes the City rush hour traffic there and back can add up to 2 hours per day on top, to travel a measly 7 miles :(. By the time I get the washing, ironing, personal gooming, shopping, cooking, and had a play on here:), days gone. work life balance out of synch...

So each working day takes 10 hours.... a 4 day week would be great, but still like a full time job.
I just thought I would try making myself so valuable they wouldn't want me to go elsewhere.., the are not really being unreasonable declining, but I cannot see a way forward.,
(A few colourful smileys on here aren't there:p:o:010::027::005:)

What you mean is! you've made yourself 'too good too lose' hmm! I'm not sure what the law is on 'going part time or working less hours' I'm sure its changed for the better (for you).

Actually! have you considered flexi time. Not sure how that would work where you are. My sis did this for a while, when she wasn't well. She worked longer through the week but then had every friday off, giving her a longer weekend. Just a thought !

Hi ya Fleur

Since feng Shui is about balance and harmony, there is a Chinese saying: 8 hours work, 8 hours play, 8 sleep (3 x 8 = 24 hours of course).

I know this is easier said than done.

Are you really happy with your work or are you trying to make others happy?

Prehaps try a meditation based on the Bagua. Looking at these 8 different aspects of life:

Career, fame, family, helpful friends, marriage/partnership, knowledge, creativity, fortune.

Give it a go and see what happens.

Best Wishes

I suppose if i am to look at the whole picture....what needs to be taken into account is
one third environmental - feng shui,
one third, heaven luck, - karma and
one third self luck - me and me alone 🙂

I can tweak the environement till the rivers run dry, the mountain crumbles or the dragon runs out of breath......if heaven and self luck aren't also in alignment....then it'aint gonna be :).

But I think making the wisdom /knowledge/spiritual ba gua area in harmonious alignment might take me closer to the answer. 😉

Hi ya Fleur

Of course I don't know the rights and wrongs of your life is, but is sounds like you are thinking it through. Excellent!

I can see a way forward now.....a very rare opportunity has presented itself. A part time vacancy is being advertised in the same company, within another dept.......hopefully, the job and I are match made in heaven, and may the angels deliver my application personally ;):D

Would miss all rush hour traffic...a drop in salary grade and hours of course, but not bothered..and just in time for September courses where I could find fulfilment in other career/life purpose areas of my life.

Only just caught up with this, fleur. I'm crossing my fingers for you; sounds like just what you have been looking for. Knock 'em dead! Break a leg (in the theatrical sense, of course!)

Sounds great - maybe the universe is on your side in this one and the last offer will be even better than expected! I'm the forgetful kind so please let us know how it goes when this ball starts rolling!

Hi Fleur

Sorry you didn't get the job you wanted, but hey it may work out for the best.

Does the new job offer you the hours you wanted to work? I am sure it'll work out ok. Is the drive time the same as before?

Hiya Binah

I went for the 1st one as it was the only p/t on offer, few hours every day, it didnt float my boat really but I had to go for it.

The one I have been offered is two and half days, same company, and my oh my....what fun am I going to have filling the other two and half days with my stuff :D:D:D

and just looked at the start of this thread....to being in a new job about 4 months..not bad really.. and all things considered...it couldnt have been any other way really, or come any sooner.

errmm but then again.....if I had flowing water fountain in my career area it might have been quicker:048::D
