hello all! i'm new to ear candling, and never had it done before. the thing is i've had problems with sinuses ever since my childhood and although i already had anoperation it seems that not all is cleared up. could ear candling help me with this? also, is it neccessary for me to go to therapist as i heard it's easy and possible to use them by yourself? also what are the possible side effects?
thanks a lot
xx
RE: can i do this by myself?
Hi Anja
First of all [color="#ff0033"]DO NOT DO EAR CANDLING BY YOURSELF! you are playing with fire - quite literally, there have been people who have set fire to their hair, dropped the candle etc.
I would recommend you see a therapist at least for the first few times to experience a full treatment - I do "extras" with mine, which you couldn't do yourself and nearly all therapists do some form of face and neck massage which aids drainage and the enhances the treatment.
If you do decide you want to have a "home" treatment - do it with a friend so they can hold the candle and ensure that it is extinguished safely and you do not put yourself, your home etc at risk. Biosun also advise against self-treatment for Health and Safety reasons.
Side effects - helps with drainage of sinuses, and generally ENT conditions, is very relaxing ( did have one lady who tried to do this herself tell me she nearly fell asleep - see all earlier warnings!!). I would certainly consider having a treatment as you have to experience it.
Hope this helps

RE: can i do this by myself?
Would definitely agree with FB - the treatment should never be carried out on yourself.
Although there are very few contraindications to the treatment, a good therapist will be able to carry out a consultation and most use an otoscope to check in the ears first also.

And if you do get a friend to do it, please please please, make sure that you are not wearing hair spray, gel etc. as a lot of these sorts of products can be flammable.
I'd definitely recommend seeing a proper practitioner for it. It's well worth it.

RE: can i do this by myself?
I wish i could do it myself - it seems I'm always doing clients but have noone to do me! I refuse to spend £28 down the road to have it done when I'm qualified myself LOL. Though the massage and relaxing 45 minutes is well worth it!
RE: can i do this by myself?
I do ear candles on myself and so does my friend!!!! I fill my bathroom sink with cold water, light my candle, lean my head on the worktop and watch the candle burn down in the mirror! It's good to be able to do it when I need to and not when I can afford it and fit it in. I haven't burnt my hair or scorched my eye brows yet!

A far better idea would be to do a swapsie treatment with your friend then. It's far more therapeutic to be able to relax whilst someone treats you. Having to lean your head on a worktop, next to a sink full of water, whilst watching the candle in a mirror, doesn't sound very relaxing, IMHO.:)
I've taught my husband how to do mine, so I get free treatments on demand![sm=1syellow1.gif]
RE: can i do this by myself?
Hi redraven,
I agree with calmer - swap treatments. It's a Health & Safety issue if you do this treatment by yourself. Certainly if an accident were to happen I'm not sure you'd be covered by your household insurance for any accidental damage - that's just the fixtures and fittings - if anything happened to you - well it's just better to be safer than sorry.

RE: can i do this by myself?
Hi all,
I rent a room and would like to add this treatment to my list.
I have friends that work in salons and they do this treatment but havent gone on training sessions for this as is apparently so easy.
Have you all been on training?
Vix xx
RE: can i do this by myself?
It's unlikely that you'll get insurance without training.
It's not just a case of burning the candle in each ear, but you need to know a more detailed anatomy of the ears and nose and also conditions affecting them.
I am also trained to use an otoscope to look in the ear canal before and after treatment. This is very useful as occasionally people are found to have a perforated ear drum or a foreign object in the ear which might contraindicate treatment.
Also many people think they have a hearing problem because of wax. Often I am able to tell them that there is no wax in their ear canal, and the hearing problem would be caused by something else. The training will inform you the various causes of hearing loss, so that you can give advice to your client.

Ditto - with Lesley on this one.
Having got problems with my ears there is absolutely no-way I would let an untrained person anywhere near them.
Would you let an untrained hairdresser do your colour, perm, foils whatever and then pay them!
