I had a Bowen technique session last Thursday – ostensibly for my neck/migraines - which i mentioned on this thread. The lady I saw said she’s "balance" me and so did my whole body. She did say that my muscles were very sensitive and as well as drinking lots of water (which I do) she suggested more walking.
Since the initial session I’ve been fine – and apart from the odd twinge here and there – I’ve not felt any pain. She explained that the technique would work throughout the week until the next session (which is this Thursday coming). Trouble is that today – the backs of my shoulders feel achy and sore and so do the muscles in my back (behind my chest). Is this normal ?
Thanks all
Hello there - yes it is perfectly normal for you to be experiencing some aches and pains after having Bowen. As your practitioner said, she is trying to help your whole body balance or re-align, as symptoms can be caused in different parts of the body. If you have been having your migraine problems for a while, your body will be used to the postural positions you have adopted over the years, even without being aware of it. Bowen allows your body to get back into an optimal state of balance, so that symptoms can be reduced or resolved. But in the mean time, there is an adaptation time required where muscles and tendons etc find this optimal state - and so may feel tender as they lengthen or shorten as necessary.
If you are experiencing any serious problems or the new symptoms carry on, don't be worried about giving your practitioner a call - it's part of the process. The most important thing to do is not to stop having the treatments as your body is responding to the Bowen and just you to give it time to re-adjust. Follow the advice given to you about water and don't use heat or ice to reduce the tenderness as this could interfere with what your body and brain are trying to work through!
Hope this helps - might have rambled a bit!
Stay healthy

Thanks for this dibs. I'm going for another session on Thursday - although have to say some of the aches and pains have diminished. 🙂
Hello there - yes it is perfectly normal for you to be experiencing some aches and pains after having Bowen. .
I did call the practiotioner as you mentioned but she didn't seem to understand why my body should be aching a few days after treatment as she mentioned about the next 24 hours after treatment you could get pain. Before my last appointment the back pain disappeared but then I had a second appointment last Thursday where she worked more on the neck and head (where the main problem is) and since then it has really ached and I've had to take several pain killers to stop getting a migraine.
I've tried to remain calm for the treatment to work - but i've been very stressed due to the behaviour of some people so was wondering whether this might have affected it ??
Hi there Happygirl great to hear from you again. As said before, Bowen works over the 10 days after treatment and that you may respond differently each time, remember to keep the water intake up and take little walks often, even if it's just getting up every half hour to walk round the room etc. Your body is having to relearn how to re-adjust naturally with help from your Bowen practitioner and so, if you are in a lot of pain, give her a call and see what she thinks, maybe she can fit you in a little earlier if you have a 10 day break. Also try to get some more sleep, sounds like others are trying your patience !
Hugs

Hey there again - as Julie says, each treatment and individual will produce different effects, so don't worry if reactions feel different. And remember, if you worry about stuff, you are creating slightly more of a stressful environment for your body, which will inhibit the healing response. So, relax as much as possible! RELAX I SAY!!! Very difficult to do if you are stressed and in pain, but even a few minutes of relaxation every day will build up your reserves.
It might be worth noting that with Bowen it's sometimes better to do less during the treatment. This may feel annoying when you are shelling out money for a treatment, but your body may only need a few of the 'moves' to start off the restoration process, rather than doing a lot and overwhelming your brain and body. Have a chat about this with your practitioner - I'm not trying to undermine ANYthing they will be doing, but sometimes it is difficult to keep the treatment minimal. You may have to be prepared that this could mean a 10 minute treatment. OR you could see whether longer break time in between moves could be the answer for you, allowing your system to assimilate the information that is being given to it.
Keep smiling, keep relaxing, keep us informed!
Abi
Thanks Abi and Julie.
I do like having the treatment as i find it very soothing.:) I have noticed though that the lady i have the treatment with doesn't leave the room for
a few minutes like it says on some websites. The only time she stops is if she has to make notes. Anyway - having a 3rd treatment at the end of the week and I'm still drinking 2 litres of water a day (used to do this before), am walking and am also having some fresh lemon with the water. I am trying to relax a bit more (except someone this weekend really wound me up !!).
Will let you all know how I get on. 😉
I had my 3rd treatment over a week ago and have been generally feeling better since. Having a 4th treatment next week - which gives a longer gap of 2 weeks beteween the 3rd and 4th treatments.
I've now gone 8 days with no piankillers, however in work someone dumped on me 😡 which made me angry ( i know I shold keep calm but it's difficult when put in a difficult/stressful position) and gave me a lot of stress, so yesterday and today I've had to use painkillers to ward off a migraine.
hey there happy
now then, you do seem to have a lot of stressful situations to deal with at work and anything which is sending your body into a stressed out situation - elevated levels of adrenalin etc - means your body will not be able to use that time to do the restoration it needs.
Have you had a look at/ heard of/ tried EFT? It's the 'tapping' technique that can be HUGELY effective when dealing with emotional problems. Have a look on the forum and search the internet - it can be learnt and done yourself so you won't have to fork out for more treatments, however, there are practitioners who will be able to help with the technique if you are able to find one in your area.
Have a look and see what you think! Really glad the Bowen is working for you. Keep us posted

Hi again,
I've been feeling a LOT better with the Bowen technique as my muscles are much less sensitive Oh (and as a by-product) oddly enough I haven't had any IBS for about 3 weeks !!
I have heard of EFT and have got some books from amazon - I have tried it and it sees to work well - although have felt a bit foolish tapping away in a toilet cubilcle at work !!
Thanks for replying and sorry i haven't got back sooner - have had a terrible cold (still have it) and have been feeling a bit rubbish (thus eating more comfort food like chocolate). 😮
Love and hugs 🙂
