I am a 28 year (m) architectural technician and interested in Bowen ever since it helped eradicate my bad back. I have been looking for a lucrative(ish!) part time business and was wondering if Bowen is the answer? (also not forgetting it could help family/friends/partner to stay healthy, I wouldnt be in it just for the money!!)

I would look to do it part time, say 6 hours/clients a week. Looking ahead, during my 40s+ I would probably look to do it more and more, into retirement. I think I would really enjoy helping people!!

My questions are
1) Is it feasible to do Bowen part time what with the cost of insurance?
2) How much is the insurance/ do I need it?
3) How much demand is there for Bowen? (what sort response do Bowen practitioners get from yellow pages ads etc.)?
Most women probably would prefer another woman so I will have to consider that to.

Thanks so much!

Hello

Answers to your questions, remembering there will be lots of answers from different people!
1 It is possible to do Bowen part time as you will set the days or times that you want to work. Obviously there will be pros and cons to which days you allocate to practice - everyone will want you to fit into their lifestyles, ie most would prefer it if you offered sessions outside 'normal' working hours. However, remember that these people would usually be able to take some time off if it were for physio for example (as physio has gained the recognition of being a proper treatment!)
2. Insurance. Yes it is necessary - all practitioners of every therapy should get insurance. Where you get this will depend on cost. I am insured through holistic insurance ltd and a yearly cost is around £50, covering all my therapies. Please don't practice without it.
3. Demand. Well, this is a tricky one. Bowen is still growing in reputation and so you will probably find that most people have never heard of it. Response to adverts will vary depending on where you are in the country and where you practice - if you join an established clinic for a day a week for instance, you will benefit from being associated with other therapists, and there will already be a stream of people going to receive treatments who will see your name. For me, I've had most enquiries through internet searches and the GP clinic waiting room where I practice. It is worth having your advert in places like Yellow Pages, even if it just makes the public more aware of Bowen.
4. Women wanting women therapists. There will always be those who opt for same sex therapists, however there are many many many successful therapists/practitioners who treat the opposite sex - Bowen is great for this because it can be done through light clothing so the skin exposure that some people are embarrassed about is reduced. The best thing is to not be embarrassed yourself about doing treatments on women (not saying you are, just re-iterating) If you have utter confidence in your hand placements and don't fumble or hesitate you will inspire confidence in your knowledge and professionalism. Start hesitating and that's when your client will feel nervous too!

Hope this helps, jump in with other opinions everyone.

Hi Peter,

The lady who I have seen for Bowen treatment is always busy so I'd say there is a definately a demand. She had a good write up in the local paper and produced a lovely glossy brochure which I'm sure helped her with advertising.

I'm starting training in Bowen next month and will very much see it as my main therapy once I'm qualified, in addition to reflexology, reiki and indian head massage.

I have recently qualified in this wonderful therapy and would definately encourage doing it as a part time if not full time job.

I received my paperwok in the mail on Friday, so decided to send an email to everyone in my address book notifying them that I was now taking bookings. The phone began ringing 30 minutes later and within 24 hours I had 10 confirmed bookings! So I would say for certain there is a big interest in Bowen especially here in Oz.
