Hi, Has anyone heard of or tried The Bowen Therapy??
It is a Holistic Therapy.
I am keen to try it but would love to know what kind of benefits other people have gained from it.
Many Thanks
RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Hi Lynn
Yes I have tried it and found it a sort of cross between shiatsu and deep tissue work which seems to work quite well on tight muscles etc, I am not sure I would call it holistic in the truer sense of the word but it covers a lot of ground in action, I would suggest you find a therapist and try it for yourself as it is the only way to experience it 🙂
RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Hi
It is very interesting and very successful for certain ailments, in particular painful tennis elbow can be put right quite easily. It is also very helpful for hay fever, bad backs, etc etc.
I have had it and I know a therapist who used it.
web site address for you. I think you have to do the course split over three modules, but you can find out more on the site.
Good luck.

Hi Lorraine,
I was interested to learn more about your experiences in treating clients with psoriasis. I am in the process of writing up my case studies to gain my qualification for Bowen Therapy.
I have been reading about this illness and it appears there is no cure for this. Could you please provide me further information about how Bowen has helped with psoriasis. I have a client with this problem and he is hoping Bowen will have a positive impact on him. I would appreciate your comments on this.
Thanks,
Puvana

RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Hi Puvana
Psoriasis is a difficult one to treat by any therapy. It is a long process because sometimes the client has a lot to work through but if they are significantly affected hopefully they will stick with it. If you can get a copy of The In Touch magazine for Autumn 2003 published by BTER there are some case studies in this or you can purchase a case study pack from European College of Bowen Studies, Frome, Somerset.
Hope this is helpful

RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Hi,
another good forum for ideas on treating different problems is a yahoo user group for Bowen therapy. It is very information and lots of people log on to offer advise and help to Bowen therapists.
Good luck with your studies. I qualified in Sept and am currently studying the equine Bowen.
RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Hi
I have been very busy lately and you haven't heard from me for a while.
Been Practacing Bowen for 8 years now and find it a very holistic treatment
Psoriasis can be treated with Bowen but can take a while with treatments on a weekly basis. Kidney move is very important in this particular area. Also the emotional side of Psoriasis is very import to mention to your client. If you have done some NLP it is good to go through and clear the emotional issue attached to the problem. Wonderful tool to have a Bowen Therapist
Hope this helps. Also got to site for more inform.
Love and light to all Heather
RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Hi, Having just experienced a treatment, I'm curious about some of the replies here. My understanding of the technique is that it is not deep work, and therefore easy on the therapist. In fact the touch is so light, I was wondering whether this can really help chronic muscular/joint problems? Apparently to feel no positive effects immediately after a treatment is 'normal', as these may be felt in the days following the treatment. In terms of benefiting muscular problems I don't see how this can work if nothing is felt during or immediately after the treatment? If anyone can explain this to me, I'd be really grateful!
Thanks,
Tracey
RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
HI Tracey,
If you are used to deep muscle massage, or chiropractice, then you do get the idea that only heavy work can be of benefit... I did some courses in Bowen Technique. On one of them, there was a chiropractor that wouldn't believe i twhen the tutor showed as very gentle technique and said it was good for twisted pelvic bone and unequal leg length. Half an hour later -and one 'client later"- he had to admit that he was impressed! The person he had worked on went from one clealry shorter leg to two even sized legs.
Bowen Technique "settles duirng sleep", that's why you may feel more benefits the next day.

RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Bowen connects with the body's own ability to heal itself it acts on the sensory/motor nerve responses travelling to and from the brain. That is why it is so powerful and works at a cellular level releasing muscle tension, emotional problems, hayfever , allergies etc. Many of the bowen moves correspond with key acupressure points, meridans and also key lymph nodes/places in the body which is why they have such a far reaching response. For further info check out 🙂
RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Thanks for your replies - I'm interested in finding out more. Layla, I noticed on your site you say, 'recent studies have shown the beneficial effects of deep levels of relaxation on our immune and hormonal systems'. Do you know of any research that has examined the beneficial effects of the Bowen Technique specifically? My background is in research, so I'd be interested in reading such research material. So far I've only come across one study that showed that the Bowen Technique reduced symptoms of one condition in some patients - surely there must more!
Thanks again,
Tracey
RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Hi there is a lot of ongoing research at the moment with Bowen. Recent papers show research into frozen shoulder, migraine, asthma. If you check out the main sites for the Bowen schools , i think there is info on there.
At the moment they are trying to set up a research council to research the depths of Bowen's effects. As practionners we all know it works, but unless we have stats we can not convince doctors etc. so easily. Hope that helps.
RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Hi 😀
I had Bowen Technique for asthma but stopped going when I became pregnant. I found it quite beneficial.

RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
I've had four Bowen sessions to try and address my sciatica. The pain and numbness in my left leg has not subsided and now I have numbness, pins and needles and weakness in my left arm. Is this normal?
It is a very worrying set of symptoms and my bowen therapist has gone on holiday for a month so I can't ask her!
RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
It may be a bit on this one - I know, sorry. If you'd Posted in Ailments section, then I'd have been straight on it or at least in a few days. 😀
Your Bowen Therapist may not have appropriate qualifications to diagnose the cause of your sciatica. Sciatica being a symptom and not a diagnosis as many seem to think. It can have various causes and if you are now getting numbness, then it may be a disc injury in your lumbar spine.
If the problem hasn't resolved, then I would suggest that you see an osteopath.
Also checkout the Back Problem under ailments forum and do HP Search on sciatica.
Andrew.
RE: Bowen Technique/ Therapy London
Bowen practitioners don't diagnose because they are not medically trained.
Still they can give an effective treatment based on the symptoms presented by the client or the doctors opinion.
Bowen usually take 2 - 3 treatments to sort the problem out - however, if you re-injured yourself in the meantime or did not follow some very basic rules it might take longer.
Very often Bowen clients do experience worsening of the condition for a short period - and than gradual improvement above the original state.
Bowen often works succesfully just within 1 treatment (even for chronic problems) - and would balance other body systems/organs at this same time.
I had a client with a chronic elbow pain (due to sports injury) - the pain was gone within 3 days and the next day she quitted her cigarette addiction as well as reporting a surge of energy/vitality.
Every therapist should be reached by phone or by email - even when on holidays.
RE: Bowen Technique/ Therapy London
I have a salon and i advertise a bowen therapist in my shop. The other day i mentioned my stiff hands (i am only 25 but all this massage is killing me!). She did a 5 minute treatment on me and i have not had any problems since!...
Amazing! I reccomend it to anyone
RE: Bowen Technique/ Therapy London
Hi
I have had many Bowen treatments for a back problem as has my daughter for Asthma, I would highly recommend it. My bowen therapist Alastair Rattray is a leader in treating Asthma in Children and teaches for the European College of Bowen Studies his website can be found at which includes many very interesting case studies and articles. Bowen Therapy also has a really effective Asthma Emergency Procedure for those moments when it feels like an asthma attack is coming.
RE: Bowen Technique/ Therapy London
hi
while working in a drug treatment and testing order unit, bowen was offered as one of the alternative treatments, the purpose in this case was to encourage the natrual detox of the body and to reduce anxiety that is felt while dealing with the addictive behavour.
in general it was 50/50 feed back from the clients, however this rose to more in favour with repeated treatments.

RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Hi Lynn,
I had it during pregnancy for a trapped sciactic nerve, which was very painful. The treatment seems such small movements that you can't imagine they'd do anything but its like a miracle!within about 5 days my pain just stopped, later on on the pregnancy I had to then have a second treatment for my right side and the same thing happened again, this time it took a week, and got worse before it got better but the pain stopped never the less, so I would recommend it to anyone with similar problems.

RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Hi,
I am new here and have had two bowen sessions for pain in my lower back. After the first session, my back was fantastic, after the second I have not slept and I am in EXTREME pain, is this normal?
I thought it may be the body doing it's work to correct the problem...tia

RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
[8D] Bowen therapy brought me out of a 6 year battle with back pain. I was so amazed by this that on my third and final treatment i signed up to learn this technique and now i am so happy to say i am practicing full-time. As somebody who lived with pain and found freedom from it, I so highly recommend it. As a practitioner i have seen incredible healing from injuries at the longest, twenty years old. Recently a client coming to me for Frozen Shoulder noticed that a one year old scar has vanished over the last week. She is on her third treatment.
RE: Bowen Technique/Therapy
Hi Shelley,
how did you resolve your problems after the 2nd bowen session? It would be interesting to know - apart from caring that you are now better! - I am a bowen practitioner.

Also I have a clicky jaw which my therapist says she can fix...I love this so much that I have enquired about learning this technique...
