Need advice on what to wear for a salon job interview - please help me!

I'm leaving college soon and so confused about what to wear for job interviews. Some say smart, some say trendy, some say smart/casual, some say wear my tunic!

My idea of "smart"is a white shirt, blazer, pencil skirt, heels, etc... but that tends to looks very formal and office-y. I don't want to look like i can't dress myself appropriately for the industry. Would this look be TOO formal and conservative?

But then i've no idea what constitutes 'trendy' for a job interview. I'd feel like i was taking a risk, and it might be a turn off for the interviewers.

Please give me any advice if you can (links to pics of outfits would be a great help).
