Hello
I am quite new to manicure treatments and have recently got a new client who is 92 with very yellowing nails which split downwards. I have been cutting the nail quite short and using a nail hardener which is improving the splitting but wonder if anybody has got any advice about the discolouration which extends from the tip 3/4 of the way down.
Help greatly appreciated.
There is actually a product on the market to treat yellowing nails. Another tip is to steep in lemon juice, as long as there are no open cuts etc.
Like anjimel said, there is a product on the market for yellow nails, I think it contains citric acid among other things, which would explain why lemon juice also works. If you wanted to buy something then I have definitely seen a couple of products in marks and spencer - some fizzy tablets that you put in water and also something you can paint on (but I think this might have bleach in it!).
Age may be having an effect too, and the yellowing could also be an effect of poor circulation.
It could possibly be a fungal infection - quite common in older people with poor circulation. Perhaps he should consult his GP - there are pills to clear it up. It affects toenails too. I've seen remarkable results after prescribed medication.
