As you so rightly say, it depends on the client and what/where pain. Lavender, black pepper, peppermint, marjoram, juniper and clary sage are among the oils I would consider first.

I have a client with arthritic pain and was using German Chamomile for a few month mixed with various others.

One week I mixed black pepper and benzoin (and mandarin) and had a brilliant result.

I've come across Plai oil this year - a fantastic analgesic and anti-inflammatory oil. I have successfully treated clients with arthritis pain, fused joints, muscle spasm and IBS. I find it particularly beneficial when blended with lemon and black pepper. I've done quite a bit of research on the net into it too and apparently it acts like Voltorol (diclofenac) - without the toxicity!

Young Livings panaway is awesome. I use it on my husband often as he is always hurting himself playing rugby! Check out for more info
