i enjoy the case study part, cant wait to get a result, yet nervous about doing the exam!!!!
Hello all,
Recently started the SNHS course (self study). I have completed Part 1 and emailed off my answers.
A couple of things are bothering me though. The admin seems a bit hit and miss, I have had minor problems on registration and having to request the password for Part 2.
Some of the comments suggest that the submissions may not be read very thoroughly - they only give you feedback if your answers are 'seriously wrong', and don't acknowledge receipt of your submissions.
Sorry if this all seems a bit negative. If anybody has anything positive to say, I would appreciate reading your experiences.
Finally, how well regarded is the basic SNHS aromatherapy diploma?
I realise I should have probably posted these quetions before I started the course!
Kind Regards,
kam
Hi Kam
Welcome to HP!
I haven't had a problem with the communication of SNHS. Am thoroughly enjoying the aromatherapy and think their course notes are comprehensive but I've have a few more books for further reading. With the self study, it takes them about 4 days to get back to me and on Lesson 1 I got one question wrong which they advised and the correct answer. The pass mark is 80%. With Part 2, all my answers were correct and I was told this and congratulated. Having studied VTCT swedish massage and various other therapies, the only things I need to concentrate on with the SNHS are the oils.
What do you mean a password for Part 2. All the Lessons are emailed to me as attachments through Adobe and I just save them in a file on my hard drive. You need to contact them and tell them to remove passwords on documents.
The recent Soul and Spirit magazine has an article written by the principal of SNHS, so think that they are well regarded plus its you, the therapist that will make the aroma-therapist so ensure you read up loads and practice not just on clients, but use aromatherapy for everything, soon you will get to know all the essential oils and what other oils they blend well with.
Good luck.
heaven~spirit,
Thank you for the helpful reply. I got my coursework on CD-ROM. SNHS send a password to access the first part of the course, they will not send the password to access Part Two, until I have sent off the answers to Part One. I had a reply from them which has gone some way to setting my mind at rest. They will not send the password for the second part until they have marked, and confirmed that I have passed Part One. Their welcoming email gave the impresssion that no feed back would be given to self-study students.
If anybody else is thinking of taking up the course, they are better off doing it like you, and getting the lessons sent to them as PDF files, you currently save 20% that way. I opted to pay for the course upfront for the CD. However, if I use the CD menu, I cannot access lessons 4 - 12 until I am sent the passwords, so I haven't really gained anything!
I too have purchased a couple of books for further reading. I particulary enjoyed 'Aromatherapy an A to Z' and 'The Fragrant Pharmacy'. I have just ordered the 'Fragrant Mind'.
Many thanks.
kam
Hi Kam
Can you not ask them if you can swap to email? as its really much easier.
I did not buy any books from their recommended list but went to Waterstones and got the Aromatherapy Bible, Therapy Basics in Aromatherapy by Helen McGuiness and also Aromatherapy by Jennie Harding. Most of my books on massage cover aromatherapy so that helps.
I find that it is expensive buying all the books and also the oils as some are not cheap especially chamomile and sandalwood.
How are you finding the course work?
Hi heaven-spirit,
I got the rersults from Part One back today, I only got one question wrong, so comfortably passed.
As well as sending me the password for Part Two, they attached the relevant PDF files. Although the menu on the CD is password protected, the individual PDF files are not, and are easily accessible through windows explorer!
You obviously have a big advantage having completed previous relevant courses, including massage. This is my first complimentary health course. The materials have been very thorough, and I am anxious to start studying the oils!
I agree that the books and oils can be vey expensive. I have picked up most of the books from eBay, and have had some bargains. I have most of the basic oils. My most expensive purchase was 5ml of Jasmine. German Chamomile and Sandalwood are on my wishlist!

Hi Kam
Great - Congratulations!
I am on Part 3 and this one is much harder but a challenge!
Lesson 2 goes into more depth explaining the oils and Lesson 3 is more about blending them and figuring out what blends go with what problem. Hard but very interesting.
At least with the SNHS you can go at your own pace and not be pressurised in answering the questions straight away. This module has taken me over 2 weeks to complete and just got Lesson 9 to finish which I will probably submit on Monday.
My other lessons I completed in a week but I had done A&P and the massage movements before so easy.
Juniper berry was £6.50 and Chamomile £9.99. I could not find Basil and will purchase Sandalwood which is around £9.99 another time. I just got them from my local Dennis Williams / Sally Hair & Beauty but need to find a reputable company on the net.
Keep in touch x
Hi heaven~spirit,
Thank you for the information on Parts 2 and 3 of the course. I have a day off tomorrow so will start on Part 2.
The only shop I have seen EOs in was Boots, and they were expensive. As far as I know there are no branches of Dennis Williams / Sally Hair & Beauty in my area. I have ordered oils from a number of eBay shops and have no complaints. Aromatique stand out as a quick, friendly supplier.
I have ordered oils from:
Naturally Thinking
[DLMURL] http://www.naturallythinking.com/catalog/aromatherapy-c-72.html [/DLMURL]
and
Mantra
I would recommend them both for good quality oils. If I had to chose one it would be Mantra. They are cheaper and I think friendlier.
I also ordered a carrying case from 'Essentially Oils'. I had to cancel as the delivery was not met and it is still not in stock. A couple of people have posted that their customer service is not what it was. I will not be going back to them.
I have now ordered a case from Oils4Life. I will let you know how I get on!
kam
Hi Kam
Thanks for the links about the companies - will look when I have a chance today. I even went into Holland & Barrett and looked at their oils and they were extortianate - no way!
Enjoy Part 2. Am going to relax this weekend and think no coursework - my brain is frazzled...!
Love
Hi heaven~spirit,
I also looked at Holland & Barrett, I agree, they were very expensive. Have a lovely, relaxing weekend.
kam
How are you getting on with your courses? I still haven't got back to mine yet, but hope to very soon 🙂
