Hi everyone,
i have recently discovered that I am 6 weeks pregnant and wanted some advice on doing Hopi Candles as I have 2 appointments for new clients booked this week.
I was told on my course that it is not advisable to do hopi candles in first trimester due to the essential oils possibly increasing the risk of miscarraige - would you agree with this.
Also I have a higher chance of miscarraige due to PCOS & family history so was wondering whether I will be safe to do hopi candles after 12 weeks or should stop altogether during pregnancy.
Thanks for any advice.

Lois,

Most pure, therapeutic grade, essential oils are safe after the 1st trimester.
WhilstI have no experience in hopi ear candling,I would suspect that the oils here are not pure, and as such you may be better avoiding them until your 3rd trimester.

Congratulations!!!! 🙂

I doubt the concentration of essential oils in the ear candles is much of a concern - I'd say it would be less of an issue than filling your car up with petrol - plus most of the oils arein the smoke, not in they're original chemical make-up. I'm pretty much against essential oils during pregnancy, not because of the damage the individual oils can do, but because they are chemicals,if unadulterated, natural occurring chemicals, but they still are chemicals. The total chemical load on the body these days is HUGE compared with previous generations, anything you can do to reduce that load is good IMO so I say avoid essential oils. BUT a couple of Hopi ear candling sessions should be OK (if they don't contain the oils Hallos mentioned).

Iwould be avoiding using essential oils in anything directly on the skin, and this means your hands if you are a therapist and using essential oils on clients. THAT poses a much bigger concern than burning candles.

hi lois,

i am assuming you are giving the hopi treatments rather than receiving.

the amount of essential oil in hopi candles is pretty small. as a therapist, you will be inhaling only and then only a tiny residual amount of what the client is not "getting".

as with all complementary therapies, the only real contra indication to giving treatments (or receiving), at any time during pregnancy, is if you dont want to or your client doesnt want to. when in doubt, dont! the main reason for not treating during the first trimester is litigation should a miscarriage occur some time after a treatment (people look for blame).

i totally believe that if complementary therapists could enable spontaneous abortions, there'd be a high demand for our services!

if you feel ok about giving the treatments, then do so... your biggest concern will be posture!

congratulations btw!

As far as I was taught, with Sue Maunsell, ear candling is not contraindicated during pregnancy for the client. As a therapist, you will be getting a much smaller concentration of oils than the client.

It's probably no different to using soaps and shower gels which have a small amount of essential oil in them, but there is certainly no warning on the packages not to use them (there are probably far more damaging ingredients in them than the essential oils anyway). The same goes for herbal teas.

However, if you are still not happy, could you not contact your tutor or perhaps email Biosun to find out to put your mind at rest.

I would avoid ALL aroma oils for the whole of the pregnancy.
Jasmine for the labour and birth plus a few personal choice EOs.
As far as I am aware there is no scientific research on AT oils and the developing foetus... if anyone has some - please let me know.
1. Who really knows what's in that bottle - how old it is etcand;
2. This also depends on what you eat or use- there are plenty of EOS et al in flavourings and cosmetics...try to minimise any disturbance to the growing baby.

How about tutoring the client to do their own candelling?
