Hi everyone,
Can someone please tell me alittle about white witches and their magic, what is it they believe? Do they have their own religion, do they believe in God?
I believe in God but lately after reading something online i am curious, however i mentions this to my boyfriend and the way he acted you would think i was dancing round the garden naked chanting 666!!
Can anyone please give me some info?
Thanks
Fiona

RE: White Witches??
I am a witch, though not Wiccan, I prefer to call myself Pagan. I'm also quite new to this path, though I have a friend who has been very helpful to me in answering questions etc who has been a witch practically all of her life.
The term 'white witch' I have heard from many sources is a fallacy. There are no white or black/dark witches, simply witches. White witch is a term that was brought in by some to make the idea of a witch more pallitable (sp?) to the general public. There are both good and bad in every walk of life/religion, witchcraft is no different.
Also I had to chuckle when I heard somebody mentioning human sacrifices. I would like to see some evidence of this I really would. It's that kind of stereotyping that has turned the word witch into such a negative term in the eyes of society. Certainly in ancient times Pagans (as well as Christians and others I might add!) did sacrifice humans. However we've come a very long way since then. Witches do not sacrifice humans (if they did they'd be murderers not witches), nor do they hold orgies or continuously place curses on people!
Aherm...sorry, I just found that quite offensive.
A book I'd recommend to anyone interested in witchcraft is Kate West's 'The Real Witches Handbook'. I believe it's actually intended for a younger audience but it's a very good read. The simplicity of it is great and a good starting point.
Rae Beth's 'Hedge Witch: Guide to Solitary Witchcraft ' is also great for those interested in the ways of the Hedge Witch, it's told through a series of letters between her and two of her 'apprentices' and is a very engrossing read.
I'm still reading lots myself. The great thing with being a Pagan is that you're not tied down to any one system, it really is a highly personlised journey.
RE: White Witches??
I can recommend two excellent books on the subject of Hedge Witch…
A Witch Alone (Thirteen moons to master natural magic) - by Marian Green - ISBN 1855381125
And
Hedge Witch (A guide to Solitary Witchcraft) - by Rae Beth - ISBN 0709048513
Both books are very well written and very honest and very easy to read.

RE: White Witches??
Can any of you wonderful people tell me where the name 'Hedge-Witch' comes from and why...?
Hi Stormdeva
The above was posted sometime ago, but as far as I can see is unanswered.
As I understand it the term "Hedge witch" was first used by wiccans as a derogitary tearm for those of us who are not initiated into wicca and who prefer to work alone.
It has since been taken as a badge of pride by many.
In truth and light

RE: White Witches??
My understanding of the term has always been that a hedgewitch was a healer with knowledge of the therapeutic properties of berries, leaves etc and went gathering same in the hedgerows, with which to make medicines.
Here's one interpretation:
At the bottom of that page is a link to Rae Beth's website.
You'll find lots more if you put "hedge witch meaning" into Google, which will also ask if you mean hedgewitch (all one word), which gives some variations.
I recall being called a hedgewitch when dowsing bottles of flower remedies - I'd let Dr Bach do all the gathering and other hard work 😀
