I have found it so hard to find some ingredient's for various spells & blessings etc. even the basic ones, there is even some crystals and stones I can't seem to get. The new age shops and shops as such where I live, they never seem to sell what I need. PLEASE, PLEASE, can some one tell if there are substitutes I could use for example Pine oil/incense, Sweetgrass, Mugwort, Copal. for things like cleansing, or smudge sticks. and other things like Citronella Oil, Patchouli Oil, Carnation Oil, Rose Geranium Oil, and the crystals and stones I wanted are, Smoky Quarts Stone, Hermatite Stone. I needed them for things like blessings etc does any one know of any suitable individual alternative ingredient's to this list? been as I can't even get a smudge stick locally, I have tried make my own up but the closest I can get to sage is chopped dried sage (which I like a bit on a stack pie, lol).
Hope you can help with this dilemma, with thanks!
Hi Natured Fox, sorry to hear you are having trouble sourcing ingredients.
Have you looked at Baldwins for the herbs and possibly some of the essential oils. Citronella, Patchouli and Rose Geranium essential oils are generally easy to get hold of, try Essentially Oils Limited.
Carnation Oil is however likely to be adulterated or exceptionally expensive if you can find it at all. Cunningham suggests growing your own carnations for use you could then macerate the petals in some sunflower oil. Or try the same with a few good quality shop bought carnations.
Smudge sticks are readily available online from a number of outlets.
As for the crystals you should be able to get those online very readily as they are commonly available. If you are still struggling cleanse and dedicate some clear quartz and ask it to act as smoky quartz or hematite for the duration of whatever you are doing.
Hope that helps. Do let us know how you get on.
Hiya Natured Fox,I agree,it can be better and really satisfying to grow your own..I do,also means you'll have an endless supply.
If not there are plenty of soppliers on the internet as many shops n places that say they sell herbs etc, only seem to have the bare minimum(or most popular)..
Good luck XXXX:)
You might want to try Barlows Herbalist in Burnley, Lancs...he is a traditional herbalist i think, and has many ingredients in an old fashioned shop 🙂 I cannot find a web site for them, but if you google you will find his address and phone number....he is very knowledgeable and helpful. 🙂
See my post on the other thread you started. Everything you have listed is easy to get hold of.
Natured Fox,
May I suggest, in support of Bannick's post, that it's not a good idea to ask the same question on more than one thread, because then the replies get scattered and hard to follow. Patience can be a virtue 😉 🙂
A few words about sage ... what you are seeking is NOT the sage [Salvia family of plants] normally used in cooking, but is a member of the Artemisia family, otherwise known collectively as Wormwood ... and most lovely they are when grown in a silver border. Californian white sage, which is often recommended as being the best for smudging purposes, does however have an aroma somewhat reminiscent of cat's pee! 😮
You also asked how to send a PM [Private Message]. All you have to do is click on the username to the left of a member's posts and you will get a short menu with that option to click on. For any further help on that, please feel free to send a PM to me.

Hi Holistic - you mentioned white sage smelling like cat's pee. Interestingly my plants (Salvia apiana) don't nor does my black sage (Salvia mellifera), nor does my mugwort. I don't actually have any wormwood as it failed to germinate. What is the latin name for the sage you are referring to? Just so I can be sure we are thinking of the same plant as when I was trying to find seed there seemed to be a difference of opinion as to which plant was which.
BTW I'm totally in favour of growing your own although for some things that can get tricky especially as you get further north. Having herb plants around gives a lovely energy to the environment. I have a passion for lavenders and we have quite a number in the gardens now. The energy in our back garden is very peaceful and people coming in the front are accosted by the lavandula dentata and generally comment on how lovely it is to have the aroma wafting around.
Herbs
Thank you for your tips about sage. can any one tell me if the sage used with cooking can be used for cleansing? I would like to grow my own but unfortunately I live in a multi story building but I do have a verandah and was wondering if I could grow small amounts some of the herbs in plat pots on my verandah?
Blessings to you all xx
