Hadiths are sayings and examples of our Prophet Mohammed, his example, general behaviour and wisdom are very important to us and much can be gained from reading hadiths.
He gave advice to people on all sorts, from mentruation, cleanliness, kindness and how to treat animals and family..
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar:
Allah's Apostle said, "A woman was tortured and was put in Hell because of a cat which she had kept locked till it died of hunger." Allah's Apostle further said, (Allah knows better) Allah said (to the woman), 'You neither fed it nor watered when you locked it up, nor did you set it free to eat the insects of the earth." Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "While a man was walking he felt thirsty and went down a well and drank water from it. On coming out of it, he saw a dog panting and eating mud because of excessive thirst. The man said, 'This (dog) is suffering from the same problem as that of mine. So he (went down the well), filled his shoe with water, caught hold of it with his teeth and climbed up and watered the dog. Allah thanked him for his (good) deed and forgave him." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! Is there a reward for us in serving (the) animals?" He replied, "Yes, there is a reward for serving any animate."
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "One of the rights of a she camel is that it should be milked at a place of water."
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr:
A man asked the Prophet , "What sort of deeds or (what qualities of) Islam are good?" The Prophet replied, 'To feed (the poor) and greet those whom you know and those whom you do not Know
Narrated Mu'awiyah ibn Haydah:
I said: Apostle of Allah, how should we approach our wives and how should we leave them? He replied: Approach your tilth when or how you will, give her (your wife) food when you take food, clothe when you clothe yourself, do not revile her face, and do not beat her.
Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: A man will be asked as to why he beat his wife.
RE: Hadiths
Dear Halimah
If a man beats his wife or is cruel to her mentally, emotionally or verbally we call this man a coward and a bully! Shame on a man that cannot control his actions and purposely aims to hurt the divine feminine or any other sentient being.

Kim,
I think I misprinted that, oops, it is meant to say that a man will be asked why he beat his wife!!!
Wife beating and cruelty is not encouraged in Islam.
RE: Hadiths
Thanks for posting these Halimah, though perhaps you'd better edit in the correct words regarding wife-beating with that first post! 😉
I particularly liked the one about giving a dog water because I understand that in Islam a dog is considered unclean - like a pig (same as in Judaism)? It warms my heart to know that there are the teachings that insist that compassion is shown even to an animal regarded as an untouchable as it were.
Love and peace,

RE: Hadiths
Muslims do not have to have an aversion to dogs, I know some asian muslims I know dislike them and are afraid of them to the point they wouldn't wish to touch one or understand why people enjoy owning a dog. This is partly because dogs are less often pets there and can as wild dogs carry nasty diseases they are used to worrying about them.
In arab countries many people keep dogs as pets or working animals and like them as they do their horses and falcons.
However we are given hygiene advise relating to keeping dogs, they are not supposed to shre our sleeping quarters and we should not eat from their food areas, we should wash after touching them. It is obvious really as dogs will be inclined to lick their backsides etc...their way of keeping clean...but it is not the same for us!
One should be clean to read namaz so of course we would have to wash after dealing with the dogs.
RE: Hadiths
Thanks for that clarification Hal - I grew up in Singapore and actually, you're right - certainly when I was there (several decades ago), not only among the Muslim Malays, but also among the Chinese, dogs were not loved famly pets - in fact, as a teenager it seemed everytime I walked to the bustop I was recuing some puppy or dog and taking it to the RSPCA.
Sensible hygiene advice!

RE: Hadiths
No probs..I think where you find a bunch of people thinking or doing something, there is often a practical reason for it but it might not be the same for us.
I have always had dogs and like them, they live in the utility room adjoining my parents house where they are warm and comfy, they do come into the house and pretty much do as they please but I wouldn't allow them into the bedrooms.
