Polar Bear and I have just come back from the first of many talks going through the original text of the Ramayan. There's a Hindu mission in north London that is hosting these talks in English with the aim going through a few of the verses of every week and going into the meaning. I'm really excited [sm=1syellow1.gif][sm=1syellow1.gif][sm=1syellow1.gif] as I've always wanted to understand the meaning behind some of the texts that are central to Hinduism . . . and also to hear the stories in their full glory whilst being sung!

Does anyone remember BBC 2 screening the Hindi TV series of the Mahabharat in the early 90s? I've got fond memories of sitting with my family and watching each episode. And because the story was brought to life in slow sweet parts, it was possible to take in the essence of the tale as it unfolded.

Sure there was some ham acting in the TV series, and the showering of swarms of magical arrows did get a bit aburd on some ocassions - but, hey, they didn't have access to the same budgets as the people from Star Trek!. However, my fondest memories are of sharing the experience in a group with loved ones. And similarly with this written text, I think enjoying the Ramayan in a group is going to make for great fun for my first reading 🙂

Hey Cub
Could you tell me where this is taking place please and when. Is it open to the public? I'm also excited because I've discovered that a Swami from the Chinmayananda Mission is giving three public talks on tuesday, weds and thurs of next week at Brent Town Hall. His subject is some of the verses of Adi Shankaracharya and (presumably) how they resonate with advaita vedanta.

Hari Om.

Hi Sunanda,

That's exactly the same mission as which organised this evening's event! Over the last few years I've been to many of their lectures, and have found their talks to be intelligent, and funny at the same time. People from all walks of life are welcome. My atheist partner enjoyed himself too so that must be saying a lot 😀

You can find out full details of their programme of events at . You can even sign up for their mailing list which sends info on talks and events happening every now and then.

We hope to go to one of the one's this week, so pehaps we'll see you there, Sunanda.

warm wishes,

Cub
