I found it really heartwarming that Barack Obama celebrated Diwali in the White House yesterday.
I can't imagine Bush doing that.

Thanks for posting that link.

I wonder why it was only posted on an 'obscure' paper/site - I looked at all news about this, and apart from a short mention in the times of india and a few other minor indian sites, there is no mention of it. Nothing on indian TV or Pakistan TV. A small mention in the washington times, is about it I think.

Why is that?

Its an historic occasion, the first time that a US president has celebrated diwai - lit the lamp to celebrate the victory of light over darkness and ignorance, and made some very good comments in the white house. I personally do not look at things in this way (good v evil), mind, which I think I divisive, but neverthe less Obama llighting the lamp on this occasion is a newsorthy occasion.

So why was it not reported anywhere? Nothing on the BBC, ITV, C4, Sky, CNN, Fox, utube, Guardian, Times, Mail or any other western paper or website of any size.

Interesting, there seems no mention on any alternate newsite either - peace/religious sites, organic/health sites, others like rense, icke, infowars, prisonplanet, etc, etc. Nothing.

If not for Sunanda, I wouldn't have known that it happened, which means that neither does anyone else!

I've just popped it on Stumbleupon, which means others will hopefully come across it too.

Me too!

It certainly makes me feel reassured that Obama really is trying to be all-inclusive and respectful of others' beliefs and practices.

A very late happy Diivali to you Sunanda!

Love

Judy

I doubt, if Jesus respected other beliefs?

Where on earth did you get this belief from, Meta? With respect, how on earth do you have such insight into Jesus' thought processes? Someone else will probably correct me but did the parable of the Good Samaritan not illustrate that someone with 'other' beliefs can perform good deeds?
I bet Jesus respected the holders of other beliefs, if they were good people. Which is surely the criterion we should all use.

Dear sunanda
I don't doubt that other people with whatever beliefs can't or won't do good deeds' but their good deeds come forth, not from their beliefs, but from their conviction that good is supreme. and you prove the point that respect does not come from a believe, as you don't seem to respect my belief, that is, Jesus loved all, but I doubt, if He respected their beliefs.

Well he sounds very knowledgeable and seems to have found out what the festival means to different faiths. How refreshing. Makes me a bit envious that I'm not American. Why can't we find someone like that?

I think you're splitting hairs, meta. I respect your belief but I disagree with it and I question how sure you can be that your belief is correct. However, this is just semantics and, frankly, a waste of time. Please come back to the topic and explain what your post has to do with President Obama celebrating Diwali, the festival of light.

How did Jesus did all the miracles?

I think most people are moved in wonder, when reading the Gospels, and learn of all the healings, raising of the dead, feeding the multitude, and even raised His own body from the grave. When I ask the people of the Christian faith, the usual answer is, well, He is the Son of God. Or others say He is God, and can do anything. But no one ever explained to me, HOW He did it. It would be nice to know, so we could do it also.

Hi Meta,

I think that's a good question to ask on the christian forum.

However, in the meantime let's celebrate Obama's inclusive attitude which is so different to his predecessor.

Myarka.

I think that I must have the same interest as Meta. I also am trying to understand the healings that CS identify. I can understand (I think) crystal healings and homeopathy, but am at a loss to see how spiritual healing is accomplished. The fact that instantaneous healing is claimed, to me rules out our own repair system being involved. At present I am reading Mary Baker Eddy's book so hopefully I will find an answerer.

Indeed! It rather looks as if Myarka's post above may have been missed:

So another reminder ... this thread is titled Obama celebrates Diwali 😉 Can we please stay ON topic?

It wasn't until I saw this thread that I realized that I'd missed Diwali this year. My favorite Indian holiday because I love the sweets! Much better than Halloween! :p Maybe that's why Obama likes it, too. 😉
