Hi all,

It seems that some posters at least enjoyed the you tube link I posted recently featuring the Veena playing of Rajesh Vaidhya. I shall post more info about that there.

But it prompted me to think some you tube links featuring the very best of Indian Classical Music and dances may not go amiss.

I think it's only fair to start with the ubiquitous Tabla. The percussion drums that always accompany North Indian (Hindusthaani) and often South Indian (Karnaataki) classical music. Of course, it's not Tablaa, but baayaan (left side, larger bass drum )and tablaa (right side, faster, smaller and higher pitched drum, finely tunable).

The tablaa is an accompanying instrument, but sometimes it is allowed to shine on its own. That is called Tablaa laharaa. But enough of this ignoramus. Here comes the meat or rather the nectar:

Ustad Allah Rakha & his son Zakir Hussain 9 minutes of pure magic from the finest maestro that I have known. This is solo in teen tal, which is in sixteen beats.

Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa almost as good, 10 minutes of perfection

Ustad Habib Khan and Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa Rare, very rare footage from 1937, Two maestros together, divine.

Pandit Anindo Chatterjee , a current master.

Precious one this

Drummers on HP might find this interesting.

I shall post this now, as my PC is feeling the strain.

Enjoy,

Tablaa, supporting info

Hi all,

On the first link I posted, Ustad Alla Rakha Khan needs no introduction from me. He accompanied Ravi Shankar(Sitar) and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan (Sarod) and was introduced by the legendary Violinist Yehudi Menuhin, [DLMURL="http://www.search.connectinghistories.org.uk/engine/resource/default.asp?theme=30&originator=%2Fengine%2Ftheme%2Fdefault.asp&page=&records=&direction=&pointer=17&text=1&resource=1026"]President of the Asian Music Circle[/DLMURL]

The tal (beat) used was teen tal or sixteen beats, which is used in the fast jhaalaa, or concluding part of a Classical Indian music recital. Info on Tala is well summarised here.

In that first lonk from 2minute - 5 minutes the maestros can be heard reciting the bol or the language of the tablaa. The tabalchi (tabla player) uses these to start and practise, improve and improvise.

The bol for the teen tal consists of :

Dha Dhin Dhin Dha,
Dha Dhin Dhin Dha,
Dha Tin Tin Ta,
Ta Dhin Dhin Dha.

The bol is voiced in the mouth and reproduced on the tablaa. The very finest players have the consummate skill and rare genius to bring the inert skin of the tablaa come to life and actually speak the bol. Absolutely spellbinding.

I hope you can hear this as I can.

When accompanying an instrument, Sitar, Sarod, Bansuri, Violin, Veena or even a vocalist, sometimes you find the sawaal - jabaab (question and answer).

That is when the instrumentalist or vocalist plays/sings a sequence of notes in his/her own unique improvised style, and the tabalchi replies with a solo response not only reproducing but enhancing the style.

And it goes on for several minutes.

Captivating stuff!

More later.

Hi Prashna

The drumming, very impressive! Being a massage therapist you have to be ambidextrous and I can hack and cup along with the best of 'em:cool: (or so Cirrus likes to think;)). But my goodness your links demonstrate something that doesn't, through hearing alone, seem possible to be just one person. Amazing!

Now, do you do requests?
The beautiful Indian ladies you showed us at the New Years Eve party, I would love to see some of those brightly coloured ladies performing traditional Indian dances.

Seen the Ma Kali dance in your Sanatana Dharma thread. Brilliant!

Hi all,

In the last post I did mention Ravi Shankar, Ustad Alla Rakha Khan and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Here are a few links for those who may not know these names so well :

Ravi Shankar, Alla Rakha - Rag Charukeshi self-explanatory really

Ravi shankar, alla rakha, Ali Akbar khan All 3 maestros together, a rare treat indeed!

Enjoy!

If I can, only if I can, Cirrus.

Here are some of the best dancing I have seen on the Internet.

Beautiful playing of the Viinaa, in the Karnataki style (South Indian) as well.
