Hello, I am not a great follower of religion be irrespective of the types. But when I get to hear about Hinduism I cant withheld myself from taking a closer probe as there are so many things that arouse interest. Like the "Vaastu" or the proper way in which things should be kept in home are discussed, if I am not wrong there are some products too which are said to be effective in this. I would like to hear from others who have been benefited from this, it would be great if someone does tell me about the scientific reasoning behind this if any.

Hi FrontRunner,

Firstly, may I thank you for your interest?

"Vaastu"?

AFAIK, the word simply means substance.

I believe, the word has its roots in the Sanskrit term "vasati" which means "dwelling" or one's own home.

Therefrom, vaastu simply means objects that are integral or essential to the said dwelling.

I am not aware of any "proper way in which things should be kept in home"!

And yes; I am a Hindu, born and brought up in India!

Perhaps you could elaborate about this "vaastu" that I am unaware of!

Then we could discuss the reasoning, if any, scientific or otherwise!

Regards.

Vaastu is a noble concept, and worthy of recognition....if you can afford to spend vast amounts of money on re-designing and altering your living space to suit a consultant......for the majority of working folk who could never afford it....feng-shui is a cheaper alternative.

Personally I just smudge, bless and call the Quarters.....greet the Sunrise and reve're the Moon.....it works for me

Hi there,
vastushastra, or the 'science of dwellings' is not something I know much about. I remember coming across a few texts, like Maya's mayamatam, and Vishvakarma's vastushastri in Sanskrit, but I'm not sure if they've been translated. I would think probably not, as they are very technical manual type texts, and vastushastra isn't that popular (yet), even in India.
There is probably a page on Wikipedia about it - have you tried reading up on it there?
Regards,
Shankar

I've always understood Vastu to be the Indian equivalent of Feng Sui and indeed Wikipedia says this:

Though Vastu is conceptually similar to Feng Shui in that it also tries to harmonize the flow of energy (Also called Life-force, and ) through the house, it differs in the details, such as the exact directions in which various objects, rooms, materials etc are to be placed.

I did buy a book about it but it was horribly complicated and I had to give up!

LOL, Gawd knows why, but an elderly Uncle of mine in Florida of all places came across a remote and little-known Indian text on this and sent it to me. Oops - I don't know where it is, so I might have got rid of it! 😮 But it was indeed very complex, and that particular text, roughly 2000 years old, didn't ring true to me except for its being superstitious.

For that matter, I find most of Chinese feng shui, if not all, to be superstition as well. 😮
